For no apparent reason, while going 25mph down a slight hill, it felt like the brakes were dragging. Then while accelerating to 45mph the truck was really dragging. I turned the OD off and the problem went away. Truck accelerated as normal. I'm not sure what this could be. Is there a sensor or something on the OD that might cause this? Should I flush the fluid? It got hot and I serviced the tranny. The fluid smelt really burt. It's also been chattering under low rpm's since it got hot. I thought it was the u-joints, I've replaced the back one and the carrier bearing. Which helped but still there. But now this new thing. Any help would be great. It's a 92 F250 7.3 e4od with 170,000 mi.
Thanks Matt
This happened to my 93 F150 4x4 80 miles from home after dark . I shut od off and got home . The trans was toast, ended up rebuilding it.(Was the second trans in 18000 miles -Law suit) Last One was good.(different shop) I hope your problem is different . Take to good trans shop or garage. Good luck'

See if the transmission is throwing any codes. Does the OD Off light on the end of the shifter flash? If so, this indicates a code has been stored on your computer.
The pre 1995 E4OD's had their share of problems. If you have 170,000 on one tranny, you're doing pretty good. I'd take it to a good shop and have them check it out before we rule the tranny as toast...
Thanks Handyman, I just flushed the tranny and will see if that helps. I'll test drive it soon and see if it's any better. I put a temp gauge on it and noticed that the senser was leaking, so maybe a level issue, I don't know if that would do it. I didn't check the level before I flushed it. I'll keep playing with it and see. I don't like the idea of having to have the tranny changed out, they are so expensive.
