Need Help!!! Growling and dragging when driving...

My '96 4x4 Xcab, 5.0, E4OD(187k) has developed a pronounced dragging feel and a growling sound, noticed under the floor of the driver's compartment when above 30mph.

The truck does not pull either direction under accel, coast, decel or braking. The dragging/growling does not resolve when trans in neutral and coasting.

The brakes do not feel hot after driving and the axle's do not feel hot to the touch after driving.

Trans fluid is at proper levels and smells good without burning smell and the shifts are nice and smooth.

I cannot figure out what may be wrong...please help.

Hey I was going to post the same so I'll add to yours instead. I took the front drive shaft off (because transfer shifter is frozen) and left hubs turned locked in and the problem doesn't occur do I am guessing it is the transfer case??? I just bought this truck 96 f350 4x4 with 460 auto and when I drove it at 5 mile an hour it seemed like it wanted to stop, like the bearings were out of it. I got under and took transfer linkage off next and I can shift it with the rod by hand. I don't know if it was in low range or not but I am not sure what the problem is. I am going to try replacing the transfer case first. This was used as a plow truck and I figured it was abused. the truck shows 65000 miles. It has an exhuast leak that turns out to be the exhaust manifold bolts are rusted off and the block looks like the freeze plugs will let go soon. I am looking for a motor today to put in before I replace transfer.
