I'll try to help you with both posts...
If I understand you correctly, you have a 61 4X4 with an auto? I would guess that the motor/tranny have been swapped in. How does the engine mount? does it have mounts on the sides or one on the front?
As far as the 292- it will go right into a 61, but if the engine in it now is not original, there may have been some alteration made to the motor mounts.
can you describe the engine in the 61? maybe you can get the casting number off of it (it should be near the oil filter). that would help to identify it. In 61, a 6 cyl would have been a 223, but I've never heard of an auto 4X4 behind a 223. that doesn't mean it's not possible, but I'm guessing you have a later model 300 in there.
