I need to replace the wiring in my truck. I know about some of the different wiring kits but I don't know which is going to be the best. I have a 1964 stepside with a 292y.
I also noticed a problem in the speedo. When I am traveling around 5-10mph the speedo jumps from the bottom to 15mph marks. When I get my speed up a little the speedo regains most of its control. I took the cable off the back of the instrument panel and looked at the components. What I think is happening is that the little **** that the cable attaches spins freely about 2 turns on the 3rd turn it gets a little hung up and then jumps forward. What can I do to stop this from happening?
Thanks for that suggestion.
Is there any good way that I can go through and check that all of the connections a clean between connecters? I have heard of a spray that is good, what is it called again?
If it's electrical connections you're referring to then what you want is Electrical contact cleaner. You can find it in the electrical section of any hardware store, or auto parts store.
Just a thought.....

Tyler, Depending on what your plans are for your truck. Do you have a lot of add on's, like AC, stereo, power windows? Are you a competent mechanic or do you have a friend who is, and can help? How does the budget look? Several companies make a complete 18 connection wiring system that is state of the art, and anyone can install it. Costs about $350.00. Cheaper is a 50.00 dollar box with a couple of circuits and fuses for AC and stereo or power windows. Easy install for anyone. Or you can do the cheapy no-brainer that I used. Buy a fist full of double weather pack connectors, brown, black, green and yellow wire and a roll of good electrical tape. Cut the wiring harness where it comes out of the firewall, and use it for a length measurement, then toss it. Add the weather pack connectors and run new wires from there. You can get creative and actually make several harnesses so you can remove components by unplugging them and add things like a trailer hitch wiring system. I saved the old Ford bulkhead connectors, just cleaned them and greased them with dielectric grease. Try to use the same color wires for similar systems, like red for all primary ignition, green for right turn signal front and rear. Write down the color plan, you will forget and later it will come in handy. It's fun, it's easy and only costs about 100.00 bucks. Best part is you can use your truck and fix it up on weekends. Did I tell you about the horn relay I use to run the windshield washer?
