Thermostat housing Plug

Does anyone know what kind of tool I need to remove the plug on the side of the thermostat housing to install a by-pass coolant system? It's square shape and it's not a 3/8" socket or 1/4". BTW it's a 2002 PSD

i cant remember what size i used 2 weeks ago but it was a regular wrench

My tools ain't cheap. Save the extension.

Grind a common bolt to use as a tool. It's about 5/16" on a side.

I went to several auto parts/ tool places today and nobody has a 5/16" square 'tool' to remove the plug. Why did they use a plug you couldn't find a common tool to remove it with?
