I have a 01 ex with 7.3PSD, 98k miles, I have a tapping sound that reminds me of a lifter tap from a gaser, I took it to dealer for diagnostics, they came back and said that they checked top end and found nothing, that ford engineers and their tech said must be either wrist pin has loosened and is tapping or a cracked piston....rec. a remanufactured long block for $9800...any thoughts on this? It is 3 months out of warranty (5/06).
Mine getting the same tapping noise periodically... Noticed it goes away right after a oil/filter change.. The dirty oil could affect the injectors is my thinking.. Seems alot better now that I have switched to Shell Rottella Synthetic 5W40..
#8 LL injector is noisy and normally the cause of a lot of tapping injector noise that is heard. If you upgrade to a regulated return fuel system and replace the LL injector with a regular one it gets rid of the excess injector clatter. That one injector was Ford's idea of "fixing" their dead-head fuel rail.
My truck has the same noise, if that makes you feel better.
So glad to see the dealer is more than ready to sell you a complete longblock.
Regulated Return fuel system...is that the same as the fuel mods that I read about to get rid of the air in the system? The #8 LL injector needs to switched to the shorter injector? Is that correct, I think I remember reading that somewhere.
The regulated return itself just provides a loop for the fuel out of the rails. This way injectors aren't starved for fuel. In tank mods, Air Dog, etc all help to get rid of air in the fuel.
Well I have been thinking of doing the fuel mods...I guess present time is better than later...I was looking at diesel innovations regulated by-pass kit and the tank/prefilter mods...good kit or any other to look into?
