which air conditioning systems are easiest to install? ive seen the vintage air and the old underdash systems. the vintage air takes up much less space in the cab of these trucks but how hard is it to install. I saw a 64 with an underdash unit at my apt complex in Louisville and I want one for my 65. (i'd try to buy the 64 but my wife wont let me. "NO MORE TRUCKS!! YOU HAVE 2 AT YOUR PARENTS HOUSE IN VA!!!!" but honey I NEED another truck! especially one with a/c.")
Donsboy.
Personally I like the original underdash style, but what is really at issue is the condenser that mounts in front of the radiator. On these old trucks, there isn't a lot of room and no matter what condenser you use, you have to notch the vertical braces that go from the bottom of the cowl support to the top of the grill header. (Yes you have to pull all the grill off the truck ). Plumb the hoses and dryer BEFORE you try to re-install the grill to make sure everything clears and I'd put the dryer inside the engine compartment too.
I found a small condenser from a Honda car that just barely clears. The rest of the installation is pretty vanilla because you have plenty of room for the rest of the equipment.
You can go to your local hydraulic hose distributor and buy bulkhead fittings that will make things easier also.
BTW. The new small rotorary compressors are a good choice because they are so small. Vintage Air can help you out with mounts and such.
Keep cool.......
