Hi FTE
I do use first gear from time to time on my 4spd w/ granny low. More often than not I'll start off in second gear. The other day I was told I may be doing some damage by not always using first. Is this true? Are there pros and cons?
The granny in my 65 F250 is way to low for everyday use. I don't think it'll go 3 mph in it. Plus it's a non-synchro gear. I need to be at a dead stop before engaging and then the stick almost goes up to the dash!
Mine is apparently not standard eqpt. There's a pto on it and it's a big sob.
You can use yours from the granny? Is it a synchro?
Neal, I don't see how you could hurt the tranny by starting off in 2nd. If you were in a real binding place where you should have used 1st, you could cause some damage to the clutch, but I don't believe so on the gearbox.

there is no damage by starting in 2nd gear instead of 1st. the owners manuels say to start in 2nd unless pulling a heavy load in which case use the 1st gear to get moving so the clutch doesn't get fried. I think someone is giving some bad advice if they are saying that starting in 2nd gear is bad for your tranny. My two cents.

Thanks for the feedback. You have confirmed my thoughts on it. I am in the trades. With the loads I carry, its rare that I need to use 1st.
This guy is one of those know it all type and has been to be wrong more than once.
