Still learnin' here and needing some definitions.

I understand the Y Block now. I remember 292's and 312's, but why is a 352 called an FE? Sure as hell ain't fuel economy! LOL! Is this family (352/360) related to the 390?

C4 and C6 are the common Ford auto's with C6 being the bigger?

What is a "rag joint" in the steering? Sounds kinda sloppy to me!

Just curious about a Mustang 2 front end too. I like the way my old 65 lumbers around but I know I can get a X member off a Mustang 2. I live in the deserts of SoCal and see 'em in the junkyards all the time. Do they unbolt or is it a torch job?

Was that enough questions? LOL!

I've been learning some things too on this site.
Somebody said FE means Ford-Edsel
352,360,390,428 are the same family. You can get a hint about
motor families sometimes by looking at gasket kits-1 kit may
fit multiple motors.
c4 is the trans for normal applications
c6 is the heavy duty trans.
c4 usually has the small block bellhousing
c6 can be small or big block
rag joint is the rubber coupler on the steering box input shaft.
It dampens vibrations and keeps the hydraulic noise of the power
steering box from coming up through the steering shaft.
To put a Mustang II front end on your truck, you need to buy
a crossmember that is designed for your year truck from somebody like Fatman Fabrication or Heidts etc. Then you
put all the bolt on items from the mustang II on your crossmember. If you try a crossmember from the junkyard it will
require lots of fabrication.

Mr. Bill, your truck is way to heavy for a mustang II front end. Your truck will weigh twice that of a mustang, and you would be asking for trouble to try one.

You are right about Fuel Efficency not being big with the Ford Edsel. That engine family was first introduceed in 1958 in the Edsel auto. Damn good motors, real work horses.

If you raise the hood on your truck and follow the steering shaft through the firewall and down past about 5 in. you will see your rag joint. It is round and about 2 1/2" round, and buffers the column shaft to the steering gear box. Kinda looks like tire material.

the reply about the Mustang II front end does not take into account that the motor in the Mustang sat farther forward than it would in your truck. In your truck the engine weight is better distributed to the rear wheels than it was in the Mustang II. The car carried a larger percentage of the vehicle weight over the front wheels. If you put coil springs from a V8 Mustang that had air conditioning, it would be too harsh of a ride to enjoy.

I understand the Mustang 2 deal now. It's an aftermarket piece designed to be welded into a particular application that accepts Mustang 2 suspension. Neat idea.

Like John said tho, this 65 F250 is heavy! We had a law around here that said over 5000 lbs had to carry and pay for a more expensive commercial license plate. My Dad tells me the original owner tried to get under the limit by leaving the spare out, no back bumper, low on fuel, etc, LOL! He got close but never made it. It is a 5000 lb truck.

pntrbil; SoCal Huh! Keep an eye out for a rust free 66 F 100 core support. About the suspension on your 65. Congratulations! You own the first Ford truck IFS system and you can add all the modern upgrades you need. So fortunately you do not need the Mustang IFS. Adding sway bar, power disk brakes, gas shocks, power steering, dropped I Beams, radial tires, Poly bushings and alloy wheels is breeze using Ford or available after market parts. Ain't ya glad ya asked! What ever you do don't ask "what does FE Mean"

OK, I won't ask what FE means anymore, but what's a core support? LOLOL! I'm guessing something in the front that holds up the radiator but I really don't have a clue!

I live in the desert where I have lots of room for parts vehicles and believe me, there are a few out there now! Rest assured if I come across any kind of OLD Ford Truck, it will have a home.

There's quite a few 61-66's still running around in daily service. I just never noticed before.

Bill, You are correct, the core is the front anchor of the truck. It bolts directly to the chassis, holds the radiator as well as fenders and everything else connected out there.

I don't know how sheet metal lives out there, but core supports are one of the most sought after parts for our series truck, along with hoods, tailgates, and fenders.

Where are you located?

I live in the High Desert just outside of the LA Basin. Never saw snow fall until I was 38. LOL! We do get a little snow up here in the dez but it hasn't snowed in LA since the Ice Age.

I'm a junkyard dog just like the rest of you and the next time I'm in one I'll post what I find. Wouldn't surprise me ....
