I've been putting 7 quartz of oil in my 03 superduty V10 for awhile,I just relized that the manual says 6 quartz with a filter, any input would be appreciated!
Put in the exact amount of oil the manual says to when changing the oil and filter. Run the engine for a few minutes to completely fill the filter. Shut the engine down and let it sit for 15mins or a 1/2 hour on level ground. Then check the dipstick; you can use a razor blade to mark the dipstick where the full mark is. Now you have a reference point for checking the oil level between oil changes.
The engineers that designed and built your engine had Ford put in print the amount of oil you should add when doing an oil change. A dipstick should be used for reference only.
And a darn good reference point that dipstick is. Those mere laborers and hackers do a good job when they just slap those things together...Mine's dead center...Unless there's massive tolerance differences in the way the engines are built, six quarts and a filter will show up on mine the same as yours.
Cool, thanks I'll try that,I guess if I've been overfilling a little but I dont want to see something bad happen,I only use it for towing and it works great, love this truck.
On my '06 the manual calls for 7 qts when an oil change with filter is done. After a complete oil change, the oil level is about 1/8" to 3/16ths of an inch above the top line that boxes in the hash marks.
I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that the '06 V10 requires just 6qts of oil after an oil filter and oil are changed. If I'm not mistaken, both the 5.4L and the 6.8L require 7qts.

I think the manual of a 03' and the 06' recommend a different amount of oil, cause my manual on the 03' says 6 quarts for the 5.4 and 6.8 litre with oil filter, mabye 6 quarts just isnt enough when the filter is changed who knows!
this is good to know,I just did an oil chage and when I checked the dipstick it was hard to tell exactly where the oil was,my truck sits very high in the front from the 10" lift so that might be another reason, its not sittin level so 7 quarts is saying its full.
In my case, 6 qts comes up to half way between the low and full marks on the dipstick. I used to fill it with another .5 qts to get it to FULL. If you are getting 7 into it, you are probably checking the oil right after shutting it off? There's a lot of oil in the heads of an OHC motor - especially one as big as the V10. After it drains down, that's the other .5 qts.
Here's my story as to why I stopped adding the extra .5 qts:
I used to get a blue PUFF of smoke from the exhaust, always after starting it for 5-10 seconds, shutting it down, and leaving it until the next day. Start it up, POOF... This a known thing on the V10, lots of people get it, and never have a problem EVER.
However, I tried a little experiment. I started putting only the 6 qts in, and now I hardly EVER get the blue puff.
So, that .5 qts is really doing something. I'm theorizing, but I think there's a lot of oil slung around on initial startup, probably getting more oil up past the rings. Under normal circumstances, this is fine, but with that 10-second-start/shutdown/next-morning-startup routine, I believe the oil that got past the rings is pooling in the cylinder, and the next morning, POOF.
Except for spark-plug longevity (and catalytic converter longevity) I don't think it's a major problem.
However, if Ford says something, there's a reason for it. Keep it at 6 qts, I'd say.
I put 6 qt with filter in my 2004 V10. This brings the mark to half way on the dip stick. According to my dealer service department, that is the correct place. If you are using 7 qt, you are deffinately overfilling it!
