I'm doing a frame off restoration on a 68 2wd. it has the 2 part drive shaft set up. While putting the two shafts through the bearing I observed the splined section of the front shaft, which slides into the rear shaft linking yoke, only slid 3 1/4 inches into the yoke. There is a grease fitting on the yoke but for it to work the splines needs to slide in another 1 1/4 inch. This can't be done without adding length to the rear shaft.
Is this correct or should the shaft be longer. My thinking is this is to acomadate the vertical travel of the rear but my friend thought it might be too much?
I drove the truck for 6 years and never had a problem but I plan to do more trailer towing when the restration is finnished and want'ed to be sure.
Thanks
John
Your ok. Just lube it properly. Apply grease to the fitting until it comes out the hole in the yoke, then put your finger on the hole and force the grease into the splines. You'll be good to go.
