Intermittent distributor noise

//Sorry for the cross-post - didn't see any response in the inline six forum//

I drive a 95 F-150, 4.9L/300ci, 5-speed.

I've noticed a noise the last couple of days as I've started it and initially attributed it to a cold belt/pulley bearing.

I checked today, and the stethescope result is that the noise is coming from the distributor. Here's what I've noticed:

- Primarily present when engine is cold

- Noise goes away when engine is running faster than about 1600 rpm.

- Noise not normally present when under a load (even lugged down below 1200 rpm)

- Noise sounds a whole lot like a failing pulley bearing.

- At idle, the noise disappears for a few moments, then comes back, goes away, comes back.

- The engine does not seem to run rough, miss, or otherwise seem to be bothered when the noise is present/gone. Idles right along fine.

Any ideas on what seems to ail her?

Thanks

Gig

That's a new one too me. If it bothers you try replacing the distributor. If not just wait until something tears up.

Did changing the distributer help? Your description sounds just like my truck.

300 6 cyl hasn't been online here since March 17th so its unlikely that he'll respond anytime soon.

If you'll provide some specifics to your situation then perhaps someone will pick up on it & respond.

I'd like to help but am unfamiliar with causes of noise in 4.9 dizzys.

If you get no help, you might just want to start your own thread.

Good Luck

if you haven already done so remove the cap and router and inspect it for anything not normal. then grab hold of the shaft and try to wiggle it back and forth and up and down. note what kind of movement you have and post it here.

I have been having several of these 300s coming with issues related to the distributor and most of them have been callused buy cheep Chinese caps and routers. one even had the router hit the contact in the cap so hard it shattered the cap and router. if you have shaft play then we will work on that.

Distributer gear could be worn, or starving of lube. If leech is wrong than pull dist out and check the heli gear, If good the gear teeth will be thick and un marked. If bad, they will be crapy and thinner.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to check into this as soon as I get a minute. Between work and the little one, I don't have a lot of free time.

Well, I pulled the cap off and even pulled the enire housing and shaft out. Everything looked fine and there was not any extra movement so i closed it back up. We also pulled the belt off and just ran the motor for a short while. The noise was gone of course so that tells me it's something in the belt loop.
