the headlights in my 97 explorer limited went out yesterday. when trying to use the autolamp feature on my rearview mirror and the actual headlamp switch by the dimmer i can only get the parking lights to go on. the headlights come on in high beam though but not low. i've checked the fuses (4 and 8) for the lamps in the control panel on the driver side control box and they looked fine. i also checked the 20amp fuse (4) for the headlights in the power distribution box under the hood and it also looked ok. I would rather try and fix this myself then take it to the dealer and they charge me $$ if its something simple. is there anyone else who has experienced this issue and knows what might be the culprit? Thanks!
Remove the negative battery cable and let the car sit for about 10 minutes before attempting any work around the steering column. Having an air bag accidently go off will ruin your day. Not worth the risk, even if it's small.
thanks for the great advice. disconnected the battery and removed the multifunction switch. tested the low beam test points and thats where my problem was. got a new one from NAPA for $70. so I spent $17 for a Haynes manual $70 for the switch but I still got to treat 2 of my coworkers to lunch for help'n me take it apart. A lot less than what the dealer would've charged me :-)
Yeah, a dealer probably would have charged around $200 for this, so that one simple electrical test saved you about 130 bucks, minus the cost of lunch for your buddies.
