Got some codes for you

87 4x4 2.9, auto with 215,000 miles. Has had the heads crack once and intake gasket blow. Had oil in water and coolant thru exhaust. Has surge at 1/8 to 1/4 throttle and the torque will not lockup. Pulled codes got 11 pass code, continous memory codes of 29, 41, and 63. KOER running code of 25. Getting ready to check TPS. Where do I probe to check the O2 sensor? And where is the speed sensor and is their any way to check it. I don't think the speed sesor is going to be a problem. It was replace about 6 mo. ago when I was having tranny problems. I guess it could be bad from factory but I'm leaning toward one of the other two. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Am I correct in saying that the TPS on the 87's are not adjustable?

Checked theTPS. CLosed throttle got 0.81, wide open 4.5. Aound 1.2v it would it loose voltage and loose around 3.1v also. Sometimes the voltage would not read at all. So I assume I need to replace the TPS? Would the TPS cause the other codes? Thanks.

No, the TPS should not cause the other codes.

There is no real way to check the 02 sensor (one wire) on that year vehicle other then to replace it.

Before you go any further realize this: You've probably got a blown head gasket. Oil in the coolant and coolant in the exhaust are prime indicators of this. This is most likely why your O2 sensor went bad. Antifreeze will cause O2 sensors to fail always, as do RTV compounds. Fix this problem first, replace the O2 sensor if it's bad and then go from there. This maybe be the root cause of all of the problems for that matter. In any case, your engine needs serious attention. If you really want to test the O2 sensor the most efficient way would be to hook up an oscilliscope to the signal wire and observe the voltage trace. If you don't see a voltage pattern that varies between zero and 1 volt without every reaching either and or doesn't cross half a volt roughly 8-10 times in 10 seconds, it's bad or failing. If you don't have this equipment which I imagine you don't, take it to someone you trust that does. Hope this helps.

Rebocardo, my O2 sensor has 3 wires. At least I think I am looking at the O2 sensor. It is in the exhaust a few inches before the converter. Archiprelate, my original post says "had" not has for the head and intake. After those were fixed I had no codes. The code are a recent accurence. I was shocked that it took so many miles for the O2 sensor to go bad. It has 215,000 miles on it. 30,000 after the last intake problem. I did replace the TPS and it took the surge/hesitation out. Now over the weeken I'm going to attempt the O2 sensor. Not looking forward to that.

I know, I realized you said that you'd already fixed that after I posted my information. But I'd still be willing to be you money that the coolant in the exhaust had something to do with that, regardless of how long ago that was. If you do end up replacing it, check the end of it and see if there are bluish green deposits on it. That's anti-freeze. And just so you know, rebocardo is wrong you can check any type of O2 sensor with an oscilloscope, such as the Snap On Vantage. That goes for pretty much any sensor on a car, period. Hook the positive lead to the signal wire and the negative lead to a good ground. A 3 wire sensor means that it has an internal heater. 1 wire is for the signal, one is battery voltage for the heater, and one is a shared ground. I wouldn't recommend dropping the money on the sensor until you're sure that's what it is. As far as actually changing it out, it shouldn't be too bad. It wouldn't hurt to put anti-seize on the threads before installing it in the exhaust either. Good luck.
