I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on why my engine will not stay on. After determining that my engine is a 360 ( with the wooden dowl trick) we decided to drive the truck home (Left the 06 Denali in AZ) to Orange County Ca. from Lake Havasu AZ. The motor is set up in a 1953 F100 with a C6 trans. It ran like a champ, it has actually been so fun that we have been driving it daily for the last week. So today I pick the truck up from the bodyshop, and drive home. All of a sudden the engine wont stay on, unless you keep your foot on the gas pedal. I checked the fuel pump, the butterflies in the carb, the fuel filter....everything checks out great. So does anyone have any ideas as to why my engine wont stay started???? We need to fix this so we can take it to the "Crusin for a cure" car show this weekend at the Orange County fairgrounds in Ca, as we have already got our tickets......
Right off the top check for vacuum leaks...
Does it act this way in drive only, or all the time? What did you have the shop do? Did you happen to fuel up at a different station?
Sounds like a fuel problem; the all-of-a-sudden part has me thinking something changed all-of-a-sudden; not typical in my experience with fuel related problems.
I'm right off Orange and 20th just a few blocks from the Fair.. if it aint solved by then..be glad to swing by and look at it for an extar opinion.. rwtolleson [@]sbcglobal.net I agree with Hypoid, anything that popped up is under suspect to many reasons.. I'd say try bringing the idle adjustment in to see if it stays running, if the rpm is high then look for vac leaks, fuel pump may be about to take a dump. ?? As stated before, just down the street.. Love to see a 53 in person..I have a 66 CC waiting on a new Jenny...mainly me
Thanks for the advice help everyone, but still no luck.
The motor will not stay on in any position unless I keep my foot on the gas pedal and continously pump it, and when I let off it dies. The only thing the bodyshop did was primer the truck. After that I drove it home on the freeway with no problem. Fuel was plenty in the tank, I even filled it up with an extra 5 gals, tank marks half full. I dont see any loose or disconnected vacum lines either. Also disconnected fuel filter at carb, and turned the motor over and there was plenty of fuel being pumped thru the line. Redmanbob, thank you for the offer, I might just take you up on this. I am in Tustin Ranch and I will be home all day, if you would like to give me a shout, try me at 714-715-9397. I need to resolve this today so I can get my son and I to the Cruisn for a Cure car show tomorrow.
I have to run to Baker and 55 for some parts later today. I work till 4:00pm, Planning on swing out that way to grab those so I'll give you a ring aroung 3 or so...
Thank you Redmanbob for your support......If there are any other ideas that might be available in this forum please send me some reply's, as I will be working on the 53 F100 "ALL DAY LONG"
Do you have a vacuum brake booster? Disconnect it, and plug the vacuum port and see if it runs any better. Better yet, disconnect ALL the vacuum hoses, plug the ports and test.
It has a motorcraft 2 barrel carb, no vacuum brake booster. This motor was I assume rebuilt in the late 60's and put in the truck in the late 60's as well. I would say probably 67-69, It sat around for almost 20 years and wasnt run. The guy I purchased it from (he owned it for about 6 months ) told me he rebuilt the carb, changed the fuel filter, cleaned the fuel tank and new sending unit, tuned up the motor...and it ran great until yesterday..I did notice alot of orange varnish in the fuel filter, which I plan on changing today.
I'd guess some junk got in carb and plugged it up. Had a motorcrap 2bbl do that in my one truck. Found a hunk of junk in jet. Removed it and ran fine.
Pull the top of carb and do a visual check. You know the accel pump is working, so fuel is not a problem. Good thing about 2bbl is you can pull top off easily and not make a mess.
Removed the top of the carb, did a visual, as far as I can see everything looks good, gas in the bowl and clean also for the most part. reassembled and still failed to stay on
