I have never owned a diesel before and am currently looking for an E-450 box truck. I know I want a diesel for the towing power and reliablity and lasting longer but I dont have a clue which motor to look for. Any help would be great.
Hi Wiseguy,
here's what I know from F350, I assume the F450 is the same. 6.0 started in model year 2003. 7.3 ended the same year. I hear the 7.3 was more reliable. In 2003 the 6.0's had its share of problems. 04 received some changes, 05 & 06 received a few more. The 6.0 has much more hp. Reliability issues aside it’s a great motor, but it will soon be dropped for a 6.4 in the 08’s. So it really depends what year truck you get.
Im certian they would both make enough power for me I will be geting an E-450 box truck and in time pulling a 20ft at longest trailer. Reliability will be a bigger issue for me than power because I will be driving all over the country and not returning home for a few weeks at times. Maybe I should go with the 7.3 by the sounds of things.
The 6.0 is one of the worst engines ford has ever built 32% major engine falure rate worst engine built sense 1932 so says ford . I love them but my god
I talked to a guy today that said the 7.3 isnt so great either and heard of some people having problems. I was told the V-10 is the way to go. I am really going to need this truck to be reliable I will be traveling all over the country in it to make a living. But It needs to be able to pull a decent load and last as well. Any insight would be great.
pmbmax can you site the article where ford admits to that? Not doubting you, I'd just like to see what they said. 32% is rediculous for any production motor. I see ford bragging about durability when they promote the new 6.4. and can't help but wonder how many people will line up to be test subjects on that first year motor.
Naw to hell with V-10 for heavy hauling and pulling, stick with a diesel. Definetly don't go with the 6.0, I've also heard that they've been nothing but trouble. The 7.3 however is a high torque, tried and true engine that pull anything. It's also built by International, same as their Navistar engine, and was in Ford truck production in on form or another for a long time. And if doesn't have enough power to suit you, you can always amp that up with programming, intake & exhaust, propane inection, etc.
I read that thread on the plug blow outs. We have a V-10 E450 at work I drive most of the time long distance highway miles and I had to put a vot e for over 75k and never happened to me. Our truck has impressed me much but I do believe I need a deisel for sure. I am alos a big diesel fan to begin with. I think I will go with a 7.3 I just hope it lasts like a diesel motor should.
I think it will if you take good care of it, heard nothing but good things about these motors. I gotta say though, the trucks that these engines go into aside, that 5.9 liter Cummins is one hell of a motor. All versions too the 12,18, and 24 valve engines alike. Not to mention that straight 6 engines are notorious for being torquey plants. If Ford would only use it on their lighter duty truck because they do use it or a Cummins motor on their medium duty line. Oh well, anyway happy hunting!
i own a 06 f250 psd fx4 with 12k miles on it and i love it! about 10k miles were pulling a 21ft 10 thousand pound enclosed trailor with job boxes welding machines, argon and oxygen bottles in it.I have had no problems at all and im getting 11 mpgs towing and 16-18 not.Power is always there, when on cruise going up hills truck rarley shifts down. Maybe i just got one of the good ones but id say 06 psd is a great buy
Well there's no question that it is a very powerful, capeable engine in terms of its specs and maybe you did get one of the good ones but it's early yet. 12,000 miles is too soon to make a judgement I'd say and who knows, maybe they've worked all the kinks out now. Again, I haven't personally experienced those problems (I don't own one), this is just what I've heard about them. I hope that yours gives you hundreds of thousands of miles of trouble free service but just be on your guard about it, especially while it's still under warranty.
