This is normal. The crank case vent (CCV) sits on top of the driver's side valve cover and a hose is routed to the intake pipe. An oily mist is drawn into the intake, coating everything in oil. The Ford intake boots just don't seal that great to begin with, so you'll get a leaky residue around the pipes. Do a search on "ccv mod" and you'll get lots of info on how you can reroute the gases.
I have a 2000 7.3 with 59,000 miles. I noticed oil residue around all the rubber boots for the turbo. Is this normal? What can cause this? Thanks!
It's reltively normal depending on how much residue. Your crankcase vents into the turbo intake. On the driver side valve cover look for the small rubber hose feeding into the air intake boot.
Nut
Thanks! It's not dripping oil but has a coating around the boots with attracts dirt and dust. I wasn't sure why it was doing this and if it was normal. I ask last time I had it at ford and he said it was normal but I always take that with a grain of salt.
Normal, it is the CCV vent into the intake search for the "CCV Mod" its easy to do and keeps the boots clean. I am working on a mod for the mod that will return the vent gasses to the intake after capturing the oil in a drainable canister that will mout on the frame
I just performed the ccv mod and it is exteamly easy thanks to amiller I tookj the air intake off and spun the plastic piece around that is located between the air filter and the turbo plugged the hole with a 5/8 piece of pipe and installed a piece of 5/8 hose from the valve cove to the back whels of my 2001 diesel it took me 20 min to do and yes my pipes where covered in a residue of oil as well hope to see a difference herman2001..
