390 over heating

A .couple of you guys mentioned that the overheating could be a problem in the timing. Started it at 10btdc wich I see recomended here bumped it to 12 I really don't see much difference. I can't tell you the temp in #'s its the original gage but it just goes right up.Seems like the water pump is ok I checked the radiator for cool spots can't find anything. I thought overheating would be the least of my problems. The changes I made on the motor were, redone heads, aluminum intake, new cam lifters. and timing chain. If anyone could help me with this please reply. Thank you. Craig.

First thing I would do is spring for a good under dash water temp gauge to see what your temp is really at. Is it boiling over? How old is the radiator? Is your thermostat opening up?

The radiator is old but it worked ok before I did the work I'm going to get a temp gage but I can tell it's really hot in no time at all.I'm starting to panic thinking maybe the haed gaskets are covering some of the water ports I didn't really check everything like that, assuming everything was ok because they fit right on. The large water ports towards the front are ok but there are smaller ports between the cylinders that I'm not sure of I checked on the heads I took off. I guess there's no way of knowing without taking it apart. Thanks scamardo

Wrong.. as posted on another thread.. Krewat I think.. take a laser thermometer and point it at the freeze plugs at the front and rear of the block. If you get number way off from one another that was a good sign of incorrect head gasket installation.

Tell me it aint so....

If you set the gasket with the big hole to the front of the block, the coolant goes directly from the pump to the thermostat. You have to cover the big hole at the front of the block to direct coolant to the back, then through the heads to the thermostat.

Believe me Hypoid I'm not feeling good about this, but that could be what I did. Tell me this why are there water ports in the front and back of the heads, and only in the front of the intake.I'm learning as I go, I guess you can tell.

The intake goes on one way only.

As far as the head casting goes, there is no left or right. The heads can interchange between sides. The same economy is seen in the gaskets.

I know that feeling, had it when I read your second post, still there when I re-read it. Just a sympathy reflex I think. I get whacked by the learning curve on a regular basis. LOL

There are water ports on the front and rear of the heads, but only on the front of the intake is that how it is supposed to be?

Yes, and I can see a point of confusion:

Where the head meets the intake, the holes not used will be blocked by the intake.

Where the head meets the block, the gaskets will block the set of holes at the front of the block, or the rear of the block. By installing the head gaskets with the holes to the back, you make the coolant go to the back of the block, up through the gasket to the back of the head, then forward again to the intake. Hope I explained it better this time...

It would have been easier to splain with the gaskets. Of course I tossed them already. LOL
