I'm a retired Electronics tech and my hats off to any auto/truck tech of today, still trying to figure out my 05 350 w/6.0 DRW used to tow an 8K lb RV. Someone need to teach the engineers how to with a ball bat (steel).
Waste gate noise, Ford thinks is normal and over heat on long pulls with a burp of 3 qts of anti-freeze, then runs fine for the next 500 miles or so untill I get
back to the same mole hill, AL US 280 Tallapoosa bridge.
Thanks

The 6.0 does not have a waste-gated turbo, it has a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT). On that long pull up the grade the roar you hear is most likely the electric fan kicking on. They're very loud!
FYI, there was a TSB on the coolant level in the degauss bottle setting the new maximum level at the original 'min' level. So 'min' is the new 'max'. Since it's puked coolant you should also replace the degauss bottle cap. Doing both of those will help with the puking problems.
If you have not installed a coolant filter then the engine oil cooler can get clogged with casting sand. That will cause the EGR cooler to overheat which causes coolant puking. You can get a coolant filter from site-sponsor Dieselsite.
I didn't realize how old this thread was until I looked at the date of the vloney's post on page one. I immediately sent him rep points after reading it.
Don't know how I missed this thread in the first place, but I guess late rep is better than never.
The noise I get is like a Jake Brake, occurs when pulling and I let off the accelator quickly, or kick off the cruise. When I get cut off by a go cart !
Dealer quered Ford and the indication was this is normal for some ? 6.0 D,
Much louder with the K&N air filter than with stock filter.
I hear the electric fan in the summer time when towing up long grades, I haven,t found the fan but will later.
The heat problem has occured over three times in OEM tow mode and Superchips tow mode and best I remember after the recall by Ford for re-
programing and the coolant level change.
I get a beep and a engine over heat readout ,the guage indicates hot, but returns to normal as soon as I let off, even before I can pull off to stop,
but always blows out the 3 qts of coolant.
Sets the over heat DTC but I don't remember the code.
Last occurance was late Nov 07 outbound at 08:30 in the morning.
Returning to dealer next month for other warranty work, be interesting to see what they can find, I'll bet nothing.
Unfortunately, that overheating problem and coolant loss sounds like blown head gaskets.... been there, had that!
The 'Jake Brake' noise is most likely turbo farts. That's normal for turbocharged engines. It happens when the throttle is released quickly, or you put beer and chili in the fuel tank....
Help:
On the 05 F350 w/6.0 diesel there is a loud electric fan that I have heard running when towing on long grades. I see it in the wiring diagram along with its control unit.
Where is this thing and what am I looking for ??
I don't see it under the hood unless its part of the fan clutch unit.
I took my truck to the Dealer for an over heat problem, of course they found no cause, but didnot even remove the thermostat but did burn a quanity of fuel without any increase in mileage.
Thanks
To the techs, Thank you and this list and the advanced drivers. Been to other forums where you are not suppose to talk about cats or EGRv..stuff.
Well, because of this list - My son and I spent the weekend doing major modes ( for me) to my 05. EGR up-pipe weld job, straight pipe turbo back - used 3.5 inch - best I could afford for now and the CCV reroute, EGRv disconnected. truck is something else now, I cannot believe how well it runs pulls lower EGT and water temp. I had looked at a trade in on a Duramax 2 weeks ago.. not going there now. I need the SCT tuner to put out the CEL and an economy street program, along with a very mild tow program.
Thanks to list admin and all the great stuff on the TECH chapter posts.
Will write this up in detail later.
Hello all the diesel techs out there, just checking in with you guys to find out some info, I have an 04 f250 with a 6.0. I got an issue with cold start problems, when the truck sits overnight, I start it and it misfires and runs rough, until it warms up, and it seems fine after that, I have also been noticing it blowing some blue smoke, my turbo seems to have oil sweat around it, and I also seem to see it on the cac hose too, when I shut truck off it almost sounds like the turbo is still running?
sounds like you need the latest and greatest reflash, or if you have the latest, your ficm may be acting up. blue smoke may be injector related or turbo related but with it running rough, i would address injectors first. the oil sweat is normal and will not hurt anything. also with the turbo sounding like it is still running, do you have a aftermarket filter? if so, then it is normal, and putting the stock box back on it will fix the noise.
for the sake of not hijacking the thread, pm me if you have any more questions.
Are any of you techs from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area? NE Dallas (Plano, McKinney, etc.) would be preferred. Please send your business contact information to jae9c8802@sneakemail.com or if you have PM super powers please PM me.
