I can't imagine the two would ever merge but it would certainly make sense for them to work jointly on projects like the 6 speed transmission the article mentions.
It's just a slow news day... In the '60's if a GM exec and a Ford or MoPar exec were seen having a beer together there would have been a congressional investigation into collusion and price-fixing.
Well, when you think about it, one of the only other rivalries like this is Coke and Pepsi. What would happen if those two execs had a drink together? What would they drink? Hmmmm...What is life?
The true story is the one linked to that one - the one on Bill Ford.
"Ford found it impossible to break away from his family legacy of dowdy, high-priced cars and challenge Japanese automakers' dogged push to build and energetically market attractive, low-priced cars and trucks."
And they are talking about the g grandson of the guy who built the Model T.
Sounds like a replay of the late 70's/early 80's. Compare our trucks to the new ones - even heaters and defrosters were options in our old trucks, now it is hard to get a simple, cheap new truck. The rice burners have several, although they mostly sell them overseas and deliver loaded, over-priced units to the US.
I doubt GM and Ford will ever get together, but if they do Ford will be a division of GM, just like Oldsmobile, Pontiac, or Jeep. Sounds more like they were discussing selling Jaguar to GM - or, even more likely and even more secretly, how to break the unions.
I have to admit I don't quite remember the 70's that well. Something about my brain hadn't developed at that age yet. Yeah, whatever, I was 18 months old!

GM and Ford merge...and when do the pigs start flying? I don't think so, but if that's what it takes for Ford to survive I'm all for it. I certainly do not want them to go under...
