I have a 1993 F 250 4x4 w/ 7.3l idi. My steering has just recently gotten to where it will turn to the left just fine ....but will hardly turn to the right. I just replaced the power steering pump 2 months ago....could there be a leak in a hose on right hand turn side or something???? Thanks in advnce for any help.
1, First, have you checked you front outer U-joints? If they are rusted up they will give you steering difficulty as they wear on one spindle and cause the steering to lock up when you try to turn the wheel.
2, Second, have you had all your steering linkages and Tie-rods ends been replaced? It takes very little wear in these joint for them to start locking up your steering.
Lastly, If Items #1 and #2 above have been jamming things up for a while now then there is a good chance you damaged the powersteering box and it will have to be replaced.
The powersteering pump should be ok if you got no or little play in the bearing. You might want to pull the serve valve out and clean it. The servo valve is the piece that comes out of the pump after you unscrew the main hydraulic line to the powersteering box.
I went thur all this on my 93' including the powersteering box. It all started with seized up U-joints followed by worn-out steering ball joints.
I am about halfway thru it on my 91 F350. I have recently freed up the U-Joints and just replaced all the steering linkages, added a steering damper and replaced all the Tie-rod ends. Now the truck won't steer right unless in motion. There is no doubt in my mind the steering box is gone.
My 93 F-250 7.3L IDI is doing the same - only turn right when moving , otherwise it takes pure muscle
does anyone know if it is possible to rebuild a steering gear box or does one have to replace it?
(I know this is an old post, but I found it while searchin')
I would check a salvage yard for a better gearbox. Autozone has one for $150 with a $160 core charge, just turn the old one in and the final cost will only be $150 for a new one with warranty. Part # 7516 at autozone.
Is this a common problem with these trucks? My 94 F250 has a leak at the steering box and in the last few weeks has gotten where it is hard to turn to the right. Looks like it's time to replace it.
