Also, would this be accompanied with a disc brake swap on the rear? And just for fun, how about instead of rusty mottled brown or chassis black, we hit those axles with something cool? Like mid. blue or gun gray? C'mon guys, this was meant to be fun.
I'd stick with TTB myself, swap in the axles from a Sploder. 4 Inch lift with custom built radius arms and YJ coils. Keep the tires sensible, even with a 4.0l there's no reason to overkill, unless mud is all you have in mind, I'd stay 33-10.5's. Put a good winch on both ends, move the fuel cell inside, and get tow hooks on every corner, a bigger alternator, a light bar, on board air, a good CB, and a good set of tools in a box bolted to the floor. At least that's a start, oh and BTW, I vote you paint the axles the same color as the body, that is unless you have a rust colored body...
as far as colors go, my cousin has an 84 '150 high gloss black, with caterpiller yellow coils and leafs, and navy blue axles. it looks pretty good to me
The D44 came in EBs '71 and later, I believe. You can get by with an earlier model ('66-'70) D30 as well. Only reason why I am going with a SAS is for stability for both on and off-road use.
If SAS is what you're looking for, the later D44 is probably the way to go, but you can get a D30 from a jeep with the correct bolt circle right? I've never driven a solid axle equipped truck that I liked, even my uncles '03 SD felt loose to me compared to my '91 Xploder or our company Dually with TTB. I like the durability of SAS, but I like the free travel capeabilities of TTB, plus since 99% of the world HATES it, I love it all the more. Either way you go, it will be a very capeable trail rig if built right, I'm not bashing SAS, I just love to promote TTB!
I'm not worried about matching bolt circles since both the axles I plan on putting in will be 5x5.5". My only issue there is having to acquire different wheels. Yeah, you -can- build a very capable rig with the TTB axles, I just don't like the way that they go way off-camber and whatnot. That, and the only true way to get max flex out of them other than suspension and radius arm mods is to do cutout flares, which I'm going to do anyway.
To each his own right?! I wouldn't mind having a debate about TTB vs SAS vs SLA, but if you want to do so I suggest we start another thread as opposed to hijacking this one. Does anyone (aside from me) wish a 300 I-6 was a more feasible swap? The power curve would be great for crawling and getting the tires spinning in the mud!
