hello,
well my 95 f-150 4x4 has finally hit the 220k mark. Rather impressive I'd say since I haven't had to change anything major yet, except the suspension and steering.
The E4OD is tired. Sometimes when I press the gas pedal nothing happens when I am moving. It is really strange, and then the tranny kiks in and everything is good again.
Well I think I need a new one, or a rebuild. Malco and others want over 2k for it and I think that it is a bit too much.
Can I take a 2wd E4OD and convert it to 4x4 and hook it up to my transfer case?
Try doing a complete fluid/filter flush before replacing it. Drain the pan, cooler (if equiped) and the converter. Converters equiped with a drain plug can be accessed by removing the rubber gromet/plug at the bottom of the bell housing; you may have to rotate the motor around to gain access to the conveter drain plug. All of this can be done without removing the trans.
Matt's suggestion is a good one. But if it needs a rebuild, you're going to shell out $2500 to do it, regardless of who does the work.
And for god's sake, stay away from aamco. Best case, they are incompetent. Worst case, they will rip you off for shoddy work. They are known for this. I have heard so many horror stories from that chain.

Yes, you can.
Take EVERYTHING out of the 2wd trans. Install the output shaft from a 4x4 trans. Reinstall every other part of the trans. Leave off the extension housing.
