Before you dump a lot of money into the axle housing, you might consider what housing you have and what is available for it. Many of the custom cut axles are for the type with the seal on the axle and not in the housing.

Mine is a 70 F350. It's my work truck that I use to service Big Rigs. Next project is a conversion to disc brakes on the front with air bags. Next will be rear air bags. After that it's paint. Truck is a work horse along with the 74 E300 that my son drives. The 74 has an 11" lift, disc brake conversion and relocated 393 and C6. We get off the wall sometimes, but it draws attention and is good advertising for our business.

I'll check Moser and Currie to see if I should reconsider and go in another direction. The cost of narrowing the housing is reasonable. I want to be sure that I can cut and respline my axles, or purchase custom axles.

Going by the springs, it had to come out of something small. If you do not have any luck, let me know, I can remove it if you want to buy it since I was going to change out the springs for 3500 pound springs anyway.
Here is what I have found out. The early Bronco's had a 46" axle housing, while the '58 thru '60 Thunderbird had a 50" housing, while the Torino housing in my truck is 56". A lot of Mustangs, & Granadas had 52" housings, and there are some 54" housings.

Also the Torino 28 spline axle is tapered and can't be cut. The Torino axle housing is thick walled. I probably need a 50" housing, and those Tbirds are scarce, so my best bet is to have the Torino housing cut down as needed, and buy new axles and ends from Moser.

I have located a couple of shops in Delaware, that can do it. Now it is only a matter of getting final measurements and removing the housing, then find the best price.

Thinking these things thru and acting accordingly make it worth your while. Keep it up. BTW, I know this is unrelated, but are motor mounts the same between 351C's and 400's?

351C's have the same motor mounts as Windsor blocks, while the 400's have the 'big block' mounts.

My truck is garaged for the winter, so I have plenty of time to plan.

thanks, Danlee. I have all winter to plan, too...thus my question. 400 in an 88 tbird. Considering axle widths, here's a couple links to pass time:

I pulled the rear out of my '53 F100 today. The housing measures 55 3/4" from flange-to-flange. It appears to be a small bearing axle with 28 splines. The axle diameter is 1.2" at the spline area, and 1.175" behind the splines. It appears that I cannot cut and respline the axles.

The differential case is a common C7AW-E. The gears and traction section is the 3.25:1 and posi unit that I had installed when I first built the truck.

I need to have the housing cut to just less than 50" flange-to-flange.

There is a place in Delaware called Rhodes Custom Auto http://www.rhodescustomauto.com/
I need to call them tomorrow to get their price for narrowing the rear. I have prices for two other places already.

That place in PA that was posted here is just too far away to consider.
