how to remove computer programs?
i have some programs on my computer i don't want anymore, upon trying to remove them, i went to the uninstall programs area and clicked removed......some of the programs removed just fine, others didn't.
i get things like "close all programs, clean temp folder" even though i did, it still comes up, also another rogram just freezes, doesn't do anything when i try to remove and i have to restart my computer each time.
is there another way i can remove these programs?

alright, i have a kazaa program which i never have even used and it comes up when i try to remove it with a little window that says "clear temp files, close any running programs, isure internet connection (if internet based)"
and also some stupid "the best buy" program that brings these great annoying pop-ups all the time, it says i can't remove it until i remove the kazaa program.

bf250, there's few way to get rid of programs that I use but I don't like to recommend them to people that aren't familiar with computers.
I would do a internet search on removing the specific program (i.e. removing kazaa) and see what you can find. There are programs available that can help get rid of stubborn apps.
Else, you can do a registry backup and save it somewhere you'll be able to find it like on the desktop, boot to safe mode, remove all instances of programs you want to get rid of, reboot. etc.

Yeah, sometimes either way (add/remove or unistall programs) will not take out everything automatically. You have to go back and manually remove some files. Stuff, like Kazaa, had other files bundled in the download which will not uninstall when removing this one.
As pointed out, there are programs you can find that will remove stubborn applications.

There ARE some programs that are just plain NASTY, and leave remnants of themselves everywhere. You can download REGCLEAN for free from microsoft to get rid of some of that, but at a point you'll just have to save your files to disc, go with FDISK, and reformat, then reload your essentials.
This is why I review carefully anything that goes into mine. If it isn't bonafide, there is bound to be trouble later.

First, delete the files from the disk.
run regedt32*****
Set it to view both "Tree and Data"
Then under the HKEY find "services" which run the SYSTRAY on start up.
One will be under HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG / system
then
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlSet / Services
There might be one more place for Services, but, I think this will do.
The Microsoft site will explain in detail the various key values.
You can just delete the whole folder of something you do not want. I do suggest using RDISK to back up your restore data before fooling around and maybe saving any key to floppy before you delete it in case you need it later.
You can check the success with the Task Manager. A clean system (win95/98/NT) should only have 26-30 processes going with one of them being Explorer.
I have found
F-prot (virus)
spybot (anti-ad ware)
adware (anti-ad ware)
sysgate (firewall)
to be the most effective combo.
Watch out for a virus named kernal8***** in the process list. About the only way tyo nuke it is by multiple manual removals.
You can manually remove or reorder the boot order of services. You can find more info by doing a Yahoo search for "services*****" too.
