I have a 97 4R70W tranny (4.2L 4X2) and trying to drain torque converter. From searches n the site, I know that the drain plug can be accessed through the 2" hole at the bottom of the bell housing.
Sorry for asking a stupid question, but how do I turn the torque converter to access the drain plug??? I know I supposed to turn the flywheel but how? Is it a flathead screwdriver on the flywheel teeth? If so, what direction? seems like it take alot of force. There is a a cover forward the bell housing - should this come off to ease the flywheel turning?
I read the DIY on flushing the tranny, but Im thinking of just draining the pan, replace filter and draining torque converter and forgetting the cooling lines. I figure whats left in the cooling lines will just mix with new Mercon V. Is this crazy?
Sorry for asking a basic question, but Im tired of scratching my head and ready to get this job done!

When I drained mine, I removed the torque converter inspection cover. Then I started the engine and shut it off a few times until the drain plug was at the bottom. Only took a few tries.
You might want to do a search on trans fluid. As I seem to recall, you do not want to put Mercon V in a '97. FYI, there will be a plastic "thingee" in the pan. Just throw it away, it's a dip stick plug left there from assembly.
i did the big screw driver trick on the teeth. turn either way, it only takes a couple minutes to find the plug. reinstall the plug with a couple drops of loctite. this method works real good, the small amount in the line done matter much.
Thanks for the information guys. I will try it again today. Also, thanks for the heads-up on mercon V as well. I will search this further. The Mercon V bottle says its good for all Mercon III applications, but if others have had problems.....The Mercon III has been working well for the last 125k miles.
I have changed the filter and dropped the pan probably 3-4 times already, just never drained the torque converter, so i have a blend of new and old in my truck now I guess. On the most recent drain, the fluid looked dark red and did not smell bad. I rarely tow or sit in traffic so the tranny has an easy life.
I had a similar question about Mercon V. The later 4R70W trannies take Mercon V and the older ones like 97 models take Mercon. take a look at this thread, it might help you out.
