Spark Plug Change
Spark Plug Change
Alright, this has been bothering me for a long while. I want to change the plugs out on my truck, but I'm killing myself over the 2.8L 8-plug 4-cyl system. Everything I need to get at for the plugs on intake manifold side is guarded by either the manifold or my alternator. I really don't want to pull these parts off, and I'm not looking forward to an evening of busting my knuckles. So, can anyone give me any tips on an easy(er) way to change my plugs and wires. And, as a matter of fact, why are there 8 plugs anyway? I never really thought to look into it much. Thankyou. Rev. Dugas

For the wires I made a hook like piece of strap steel about 3/4 of an inch wide. It has a notch cut out the 90 degree bend that will slide over the plug and catch the boot to pull the wire.
As far as the two rear plugs a 3/8 drive sparkplug socket, a universal joint, and a 10"
extension are what I use, of course you can add more extensions if needed. The rear plugs may take a bit of time but I don't think it is as much as pulling a lot of stuff
out of the way. Of course faith helps.

Welcome to FTE Andrew. Im glad you chose the best site on the net for Ford-Trucks! See you around the boards!!
yes, the plugs can be changed without removing parts. you can use extentions and then id recommend an impact swivel (they dont have the ujoint, they use a cool ball and socket) to change the plugs. either that or tape up a regular swivel with black tape so it can swivel but not turn into a 90

Hello.
I used several swivels and extensions as well but on my 2.5L 1999 Ranger the intake manifold comes apart into two pieces. I took the top part off and was able to get to the spark plugs a lot easier. It didn't take much to remove the top part of the intake manifold. Maybe it's made this way to make it easier to get to the spark plugs.
