check engine...not egr or dpfe???

So I've replaced my egr and my dpfe and checked every possible vacuum line and I'm still getting the cel. I'm wondering how often the evr goes bad and how I would go about testing it?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Do you know what code it was? It could be the plugged holes in the throttle body too maybe....?

Without the exact code and full identification of your engine, we can't provide accurate advice.

The reason you didn't get the problem is because it is not the EGR or the DPFE proper or vacuum related.
Looking up the code 1401 says a 'high' steady voltage out of range is detected by the PCM.
Look for a bad connector or harness going to the DPFE.
The PCM can't see the proper signals from the DPFE when that condition exists.

High voltage Code 1401

I just finished putting a new lower intake gasket set on my 4.0 1997 Ranger and started it up. It ran fine but I now have a 1401 high voltage pending code showing on my scanner. What might I have done wrong?
Truck seems to run OK but I'm sure the high voltage code cause needs to be fixed. I'll check all my conections again tomorrow but don't think that I left anything unplugged. Would anything else cause this? ARGGGH!

(oh,well,it's always SOMETHING!)

Usually a faulty DPFE sensor.

Use only the Motorcraft replacement sensor. Aftermarket ones have been know to be dead right out of the box.

I'll try the main engine conector plug and the three wire plug to the sensor itself this evening. Just in case, I also brought home a new DPFE. From what I have experenced the last several Rangers I've had ,even if it's not the DPFE, I'll need it in the future!

DFPE High Voltage P1401 Code

I went out to the garage this evening after work and started up the Ranger 4.0 and ran another scan. After clearing the stored codes, the scan came up showing a pending P1401 High Voltage fault. Turned off the truck and rechecked alllll the hoses and conectors, plugs and generally gave everything the once(twice) over. Everything looked factory proper. Well,I thought, might as well get the new DPFE out of the box and try it. Did that. Rescanned and code now is gone. Put the hood back on and drove around town with my scanner on capture. NO codes! BTW this is an Autozone sensor at 1/3 the price of a OEM. The "bad" one is a OEM less than two years/50,000miles,old.
When I have more time, I'll relate the story of the recurring "slow response" from my O2 sensor tribulations.
ps,Rockledge,if you read this, I have an update from Fel-Pro on their Dry+ gasket set for the 4.0. I'm gonna go eat supper(missed it last nite )

Dpfe

If you get a code referring to the Dpfe you might want to reconsider the oem part. I have a 4.6 1997 and my info may not apply. However if you check this forum you will read that the Dpfe was redesigned and the OEM parts on don't last. I would have argued that this was just a bunch of pro Ford guys telling me to buy Ford however I bought the cheap part and had to replaced it with the newly redesigned part from Ford and curred my cil. I hope yours keeps working but if it dosen't this might be somthing to consider.

I'll certainly do that. But after spending big bucks($100.00+) on the full premium gasket set, saving a bit on the Delta was almost a must.
