I'm looking at a pair of BBK headers, that are ceramic coated, unequal length shorties for 351w's, but they say they have 3' collectors, will they fit my stock 93 351? I'm not very informed about exhaust, so I thought i'd ask before buying something I can't use. I know equal lenght ones are better, but I can get a really good deal on these.
Yeah, I was gonna say... thats gonna really kill your backpressure. you might wanna get 'em to make you a custom set that has 3 INCH collectors on them
The collector is the union at the base of the header where the individual pipes all come together so as to combine the exhaust into one (or in the case of a V8 two) pipes (one on each side). They are probably 3" at the point where the pipes come together but is the output 3" as well? The question to ask here is, "Will they bolt to the OEM Y-pipe?" If they end at 3" in diameter, the answer is obviously, no. At that point, do you have to have something fabricated to make them work? Is there a way to get into the Y-pipe using standard reducers? (which is highly doubtful).
Not nay-saying the idea here but consider how much additional expense there will be to get them tied into the rest of the exhaust system if they will not simply fit in place of the OEM manifolds. What you save there could be eaten up in the cost of having the rest of the system rethought and fabricated to work with the less expensive headers.
