Hello I was on the internet and reading about banks power I have a 2001 F-250 sd and I've installed a K&N air box factory fit air filter and noticed a slight power increase if I remove the 3" exaust to 4" from the turbo out do I need to have a resinator or small muffler and if not will it be god awfull loud? to me banks power seems a bit much in the cost.. you have to remember I'm up here in Canada. thank-you for your imput.
i would remove the 3" and put in a 4" the stock pipes are pretty restrictive. i would also recommend a straight through muffler. it would be pretty loud and after awhile if you ran with no muffler on you would want one on. i personally run diamond eye exhaust on my truck its not as expensive as banks and i havent blown welds on it yet like the others i have tried.
Herman just a little heads up on a couple of things. Banks makes good products, but you can get the same performance for about half of the price. Just look at threads concerning exhaust and you will get a pretty good idea of what people are running on here. Also, a lot of people on here will have went away from K&N. Their filters do not perform as avertised. In other words, they let in a lot of dust and dirt which overtime can destroy your Turbo, which means $. If you are looking for a cheap replacement do a search for 6637 mod. It cost me $30. Better flow and filtering than K&N.
Most trucks get 15-20 HP from an exhaust upgrade. jrciii56 is right you can get a lot of exhaust for the money, check out our MBRP and AFE systems. Excellent quality and a big dollar savings etc. If you have any questions on them let me know.
Herman the other guy's are right a 4" exhaust will be a big improvement, as for loud, that is a matter of opinion. On my truck I removed my muffler and have a straight pipe and I think it sounds just fine.
I have a Silverline 4" stainless system and it's a nice system with good fitment. It is pretty quiet in my opinion even with the straight through muffler. Therefore I removed it and straight piped it! Definitely spend a few bucks and get yourself a nice 4" system, it does nothing but good things for your truck .
I also have a 4 inch straight pipe system and love it. The noise just makes it sound that much better in my opinion. As a matter of fact this weekend will be spent replacing my exhaust with a new turbo back system and installing the wicked wheel.
I installed a 'generic' 4" exhaust (stainless) with straight thru muffler. got it on ebay. Sounds great. Saw my mpg increase by about 1.5mpg towing, and about 2.5mp -3 mpg regular driving. I'm not impressed with the K&N and will probably change it out in the not too distant future.
