I have a frame up rebuilt 1950 F-6 Ford truck, that is 90% finished. Lacking installing the seat, glass and exteria trim. The thing I need information or ideas on is the exteria mirrors, and headliner. First is the headliner. I bought a new headliner (oem) black cardboard. I want to cover it in vinly, maybe red because the seat is red. Have any of you ever done this ? I am sure I can do it. But was wondering if I should cover it before or after I install the headliner.
The second thing is the exteria mirrors. Being its a big truck with a wide stake bed. The truck needs mirrors that stick out more then just a pickup. I know some of you will say,use west coast type mirrors, thats cool. But I am trying to rebuild this truck like it was in 1950. So the west coast type are out. I have look, but unable to find any. I even thought of building something that looks old,or that might have been used on the early 50s big trucks. So there you have it. I will be grateful for any information or ideas that you may have. Thanks
Covering the headliner before installation makes the most sense, and you can manipulate it around, unlike when it is attached to the truck. And have you checked on Ebay for some mirrors, there may be some NOS ones that pop up so keep your eyes open!
I am not as far along as you, but I am glad you brought this topic up. I am redoing a 51 F-6. I had the same questions as you. I am just now having the seat upholstered. I still have to rebuild the flathead 8. I have two to start with, hiopefully one has a good block. Great questions, keep the options coming!
I guess if you want to look original, you'd have to stick with one tiny little mirror on the driver's side, none on the passenger. My point being, do you favor looks over function enough to risk an accident in today's traffic? Dare I say, "in hindsight" the original mirrors are woefully inadequate. If you are going to drive this truck, go West Coast!
Afraid to say it, but I agree with Albuq. Its like saying "I am gonna use some staples to mount my engine." Ok well, not that crazy, but WC mirrors make the most sense
I have a F-4 and I am opting for safety so I am going to use the westcoast style, I am even planning to use them on my panel. I have the small stock type on my F-2 and they're very inadequate but at least I have the back window to look out.
If you want stock Chuck from Chuck's Trucks, http://www.chuckstrucksllc.com announced on the Bonus Built site a while back that he had original type reproduction mirrors availlable. You might want to check with him.
