I just put a new fuel tank in my 86 F150 with 300-6 and carb. It has duel tanks, but they were both leaking. I removed both tanks but only replaced the side tank at this time. Now the fuel guage doesn't work. I checked to make sure the plug was tight on the sending unit and it was. Does the rear tank need to be plugged in to work?
Thanks,
Mark
If you replaced only the front tank then you need to have the fuel tank selector switch set to the front. The same would go for the back tank. If you have everything wired correctly, and you have the correct tank selected, then it has to be either the sending unit or the gauge.
Thanks, I will check the wiring again today. Eveything worked before changing the tank. Its the front or "side" tank that I am working on and it worked before I changed the tank. The switch position is in the "front" position. Could the sending unit have got stuck somehow?
Did you have the sending unit out, or is this a sending unit that was already in the tank you installed? You did say new. I assume you replaced the sender?
Try unplugging the sender wire at the tank and ground it with the ign switch on. Have a helper look at your gauge. If it goes to full, you have a bad sender. Dont leave it grounded any longer than necessary.
The gauge switching from tank to tank is done at the front-rear switch. Your problem is most likely at the tank area. Look at ground connections, too. They can look good, but be totally bogus.
You may also have a cracked float that has filled with gasoline and sunk. I know that's why my front tank always sets on "empty". Anyone know where to get a replacement float?
Thanks, I found the problem today. I looked inside the plug and one of the connections was corroded "green". I installed new pigtail and problem went away.
Thanks again,
Mark
