Question Emission System

Hello All, <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I’m hoping you can help me out. I have a 04 6.0 Excursion (no mods), It runs great and pulls my trailer with out a problem. Last month while going to Arizona, the Emissions System light came on. When I got back home I took it to the dealer and they changed the EGR. Everything was good. It ran as always, strong. A couple of days ago, I went up to Three Rivers, Ca and an hour in to the drive the light came on again. The truck still ran smooth, idled fine and was strong. What do you guys think could be the problem? What could trigger the Emissions System light? I called the Dealer and they said it could be a turbo. I will take it in tomorrow. It’s still under warranty.

I got a call from the dealer that my truck is ready for pick up. The tech said it was an Injector. I am curious as to why it would fail and what precautions can i take so it does not happen.

could be just a faulty injector, but the use of fuel addatives for lubricity would help, hell just toss a quart of 30 weight in there every other fill up. I like marvel mystery oil myself. I love the smell of that stuff when it burns, and smells even better with diesel.

DO NOT DO WHAT THE POSTER ABOVE WROTE....

Adding 30 weight oil will clog your fuel filters and injectors and cause even more problems!!!! His advice is wrong, wrong, wrong!!!!!

First, ask which codes your computer threw? Why did they replace the EGR, then come back and say the injector(s)? SOunds like they are throwing parts at it (at least at first)... but they may have wised up and fixed what was actually wrong.

Injectors can go bad like any other part. They can go bad due to clogged fuel filters which causes low fuel pressure and delivery.

To answer your question on what you can do...

1) Change oil every 5,000 miles and use Motorcraft oil filters and the proper rated diesel oil of your choice (or by your dealer).

2) Add DieselKleen (PowerService brand) fuel additives in every tank for the added protection or assurance of lubricity of your injectors. Do not add anything to your fuel except additives that contain NO alcohol and are designed for diesel motors. Stay away from the ones that work in all motors (gas and diesel)... they have different needs and no one additive can/does do it all!!!

I don't recommend adding oil to your fuel tank. A good fuel additive will do just fine for keeping your fuel lubed up.
As the previous post says, don't push your oil change intervals too far beyond 5K, and make sure you keep your fuel filters up to date too.
Those are the best ways to keep your injectors working strong.

I add Diesel Kleen (Gray Bottle) every other Tank, I add the double dose. Am I overdoing it? I still havent seen the paperwork because i am stuck at work. On the service invoice will it show any error codes it threw?

The service writers are supposed to write a short story outlining the techs results, it all depends on what he writes.

Instead of using a double dose every other tank, why not use a single dose every tank?

Agreed. Just use it with every tank.

From a cetane rating standpoint the added cetane plateaus after 50 or so.By over dosing you get little value from cetane boost but, you likely get additional water dispersement and some additional lubricity.

I haven't read anywhere that anyone has hurt their engine by over dosing if they were using a quality product in the first place.

The important thing is...you are doing something.

This is what Invoice states. From what I understand, the #5 injector failed and was replaced. Anything im not catching? Truck seems to be running fine.
