I am a new user and I wish I had known about this site years ago--what a source of info. My question is related to a 2006 F150 Reg. Cab with the 4.2 V6 automatic. I just bought it about a month ago and absolutely love it. Problem is, I've noticed a rattling type sound when its cold. it rattles sitting still or moving slowly. it may rattle going down the road but i cant hear it if does. i cant pinpoint where the rattle is coming from or what's causing it. sounds like its underneath the truck as opposed to the motor compartment but i cant be sure. exhaust? any ideas? help. also, any noticed benefits to running premium gas? i know the manual recommends regular but my old ranger ran alot better with premium.
As for the rattling check for lose or broken exhaust stud or a heat shield that is lose or touching so thing that it should not be.
And welcome to FTE, you will find lots of good info here!!

Welcome to the FTE
forums. I hope that you can get as much enjoyment out of this website as I have. Don't take this as being sarcastic; but how about crawl up under the truck and see what, if anything, is loose on the under carriage. If you can hear it at idle, then it should be easy enough to find. Do it while the truck is cold, seeing as how it rattles when it is cold. (Don't want to burn those hands if you don't have to.)
Basically, if you can get your hands on it, check to see if it is loose. Go from front to back. Also, you did not mention if the noise was presnet during idle when the truck is warm. How about it ? As far as using premium verses using regular unleaded, I could not tell you. You can try it after the under carrige check. If, that is, you think that it is possibly a valve or something tapping. I use 87 ocatane. No problems. 4.6 V8 SCREW 55,000+ miles so far on my truck. Hope this helps you out.http://media.putfile.com/my91s14mi-runs
