Changing my plugs. All plugs look similar, though maybe a bit lean, besides #8. I took a picture of #8 and another one of the plugs side by side (large picture, link below) What does it look like is happening? White/ashy coated except for top of electrode is black. # 8 plug is the top one in the pic.
I rerouted that #8 plug wire completely away from everything while I changed out the plugs just in case. Changed out the metering rods on the carb to 4% richer on power and cruise modes.
On a carbed motor the slugs at the far corners are going to run leaner than the center lungs.. so the mixture has to be a little rich to compensate and prevent excessive pinging. Better intake designs help this some.. but nothing short of EFI elimates it completely.
The white coating could also be coolant... maybe something to check into further. Can you detect the smell of prestone in the engine oil?
They're not fancy plugs, just normal resistors except for a v groove in the electrode, $1.77 each. I've done the fancy plugs (like platinum) in a regualr old motor before, like you say, they don't work too good.
The look of the #8 plug made me think of coolant, lean, hot...things like that. I don't see any signs of coolant loss. I used very expensive Fel=Pro Printo-seal intake gaskets with the new Edelbrock manifold.
Still got a mis at WOT. Can't figure it out. I'm guessing it's coming from the #8 cylinder. New motor, exhaust, intake, carb, richened up the mixture yesterday. She still want to mis on me when I open it up and it starts getting into high rpm.

Add more gas. Step up a jet size on the mains, or secondaries if so equipped until you get decent color on that plug. How do the plugs on the other corners look?
All 7 other plugs look like the one in the pic. I did richen up the carb's power and cruise modes 4% with metering rods. I can still change out the secondary jets to go richer in that area. This 1406 Edelbrock carb is calibrated lean compared to it's 1405 (manual choke) version. I'm trying to get to the point where the plugs have a good color.
I'm in the middle of putting the distributor back in. The 1st reman I put in wouldn't allow any WOT or hard throttle, it would cut out bad and fall on it's face. I swapped it out under warranty. This 2nd reman distributor took care of it pretty much, It'll now go WOT and accel hard. Just still has a mis when the tranny kicks down, it seems to be rpm related. At points where the tranny doesn't kick down and it's under load w/o the high rpm it pulls pretty good and doesn't mis.
I pulled the dizzy earlier and swapped out the p/u coil w/ a Standard brand, who knows what quality of p/u they put in it. I changed the mech advance to 21, it was on the 16 side. Maybe it just needs a little more mech advance, not sure, just trying some things.
Other than the mis it runs great. Hopefully I can get it smoothed out and there's nothing major going on with the new motor.
Just got it wrapped up and went for a test drive. Whatever I did it seems to have fixed it. Idling better, throttle response better, and no mis at WOT.
I think the p/u coils in those reman (A1 Cardone) distributors are just no good. I should've just rebuilt the original distributor to begin with, lesson learned.
So now I have the mech advance at 21 and the initial timing at 10, I should have a total of 31, which should be good for this motor I think.
I'm just tired of getting junk parts right out of the box. It seems the last few years it's been getting worse.
Just put a brand new fan clutch on, it's not working right either.
I greatly appreciate everyone's input. I'll keep working on getting this carb dialed in and keep an eye on that #8 plug.
Sounds like an excellent idea. I sure learned a lesson about the route i took. What a disaster, the parts in those distributors are horrible. Hopefully this helps others not have to go through it.
