I took my truck in to Ford because there is a bouncing/shaking at exactly 41 mph. No more, no less. I just got a call saying that "it is the gear box and because your truck is lifted it is not covered under warranty." The gentleman then said he needed to go get clarification from the tech and asked me where I bought it and if it was lifted when I bought it. What do you make of this? I don't know a lot about the underbelly of these trucks, so I feel a little confused.
2004 6.0L F250 Lariat, auto, 3.75 gears (i think?) 6 in lift, 35 in tires. The lift was on the truck when i bought it, so I am not sure of the brand. It appears to be large steel blocks in between the leaf springs. Help at all? I bought in August of 2005 and it had 1 previous owner.
It kind of feels like the whole truck is shaking. I can't recall if it was more centered in the seat or the steering wheel.
The guy called me back and he said that it is the steering gear box (?). He says that when you lift a truck it puts the gears off slightly. This can cause wear and possible leaks but I guess I am not even close to that point? Thing is, it feels like the whole truck shakes, not just the steering wheel.
That is not necessarily true if the lift was installed correctly. It should have a drop down pitman arm for a 6" lift. It should also have either an adjustable tracking bar or drop down bracket. The drop down bracket is NOT preferred...and will cause more "play" in the steering.
Does the front part of the lift also have blocks??? That is a BIG NO NO...when lifting the front-end. It should only have springs or drop down shackles for the lift up front.
Trucks that have a suspension lift should be checked periodically for loose components. That is an item that needs to be added when doing maintenance.
Hmmm.....I am going to have to look. I noticed the blocks in the back but I am not sure what it has in the front. I know I don't have springs. What does a drop down shakle look like? lol....this lifting nonsense is all new to me.
Do what Biz said and check all bolts for tightness. Then I would start with the tires. Have them checked for balance. Then move to the wheel bearings. I've never known a bad steering gear box to only shake at a particular speed.
The front has the shocks and what I am assuming is the drop down bracket (bracket on leaf springs), all nuts/bolts are tight, and the shaking feels more under my butt that in the stearing wheel. That makes me think its not the stearing gear box. Am I correct?
As far as my tires, you guys are probably right that I need a balance. I am about 1/2 way through the tread life and have never been balanced (bought used with tires on it). I did have some 'chunking' and rotated about 5 months ago.

Thanks for all the responses
Feel it under your butt? I'm thinking that maybe Driveshaft Universal Joints may be your culprit...
What exactly would that entail and is it being caused by my lift?
I really like this -->
lol
If that is indeed the culprit, the one or more of the Universal Joints will need to be replaced...Its not TOO difficult a job and not really that expensive, especially if you can do the work yourself...or can at least drop the driveshaft yourself...if not, a trusted mechanic can help ya out
i can sit right here now, and tell you that it's NOT your lift causing this. my truck did it stock, with a leveling kit, and now with the 6.5" lift it still does it.

Thanks strokin. That is exactly my problem. That really irritates me; I just spent $80.00 for them to steer me in the wrong direction. Not that $80.00 is a lot, but you think they would know about this and tell me it is something I will never get rid of.
