Not so much the black filter. Like I said, all my fuel filters are usually really dark, pretty much black. That's usually due to injector O-rings not sealing as well as they should. At least that's my understanding. But what you DO look for is the slime. It looks like your filter is coated in grease, Literally. And yeah, all you can do is watch for it and react when you see it. But a general rule of thumb is to buy diesel from places that sell alot of it. i.e. truck stops, or high traffic fuel stations. That's what I do, and I saw what happened when I deviated from the norm. Lesson learned.
