Black fuel filter

Ok guys, I changed my fuel filter today and it was black. Is this the bacteria you were talking about. I just started using the B20 a few months back and this is the first time I changed my fuel filter since then. The last time I changed the filter it was this way also before using the B20.

sounds like it! is it slimey and look/feel like grease? if so you ned to get ya some biocide!

and you'll need to change your filter again after running biocide!

also on your next fill up dump some diesel Kleen in there for good measure

Stroker, I too had the same thing. I went to my local A-Line auto parts and the had a product called Slime-X. It's made by Power Service. The same people that make Diesel Kleen. But the Slime-X is specificly for the algae funk we got. I used it, but it has been a slow process to see if it has worked. I recently changed my fuel filter after using it and it was just black, not all slimey. So I'm sure it worked, I just want to hit it again to be sure. The Power Service part # is 9225. Hope that helps.

Thanks Duck, I'll see if I cant find some today. How long has it been since you started the process? How many times do I need to treat it?

Stroker, I only treated it once. It was the same size bottle as the small Diesel Kleen bottle. I split it between two tanks. It has been a month or so since I used it. But I want to hit it one more time. But when I changed my fuel filter last week, you could definatly tell it made a difference. And don't forget to clean the FPR screen. Mine was slimey. I figure two treatments will rub that shizzle out no problem. Good luck man.

If you are standing at the grill, on the left hand side of the fuel filter bowl is the fuel pressure regulator. There are 2 10mm bolts. Loosen them and pull it away from the housing. I used a small pry bar, all the hoses and whatnot make it kinda stiff. But just pry it away enough to see the screen. You will see a small oring , don't damage it. The screen is on the end of the piece the oring is on. Clean it with a cut Q tip, the shaft part. You don't want anything fuzzy. If you have never cleaned it, it may be built up and you will have to use something a little stiffer. But it is a small mesh screen and not real durable so be careful. but keep cleaning it until it's nice and shiney. If it was real bad, you will notice some snappieness come back to your truck. And the shim is super easy to do. Just pull the 19mm bolt off the same side and you will see the spring and whatnot in there. Read Steve Baz's site for the specifics on how to do it. But it is super easy. I used just a plain bb, and checked the pressure with a tire gauge. Kinda messy but it got the job done. Your looking for about 70 to 75 psi, I wouldn't recomend going any further. Also when you do the screen, put a rag under it to catch any fuel or falling parts. Hope that helps.

I just put in 10 gallons of B20 for a test, all seems well. I was planning on putting a full tank for a 400 miler tomorrow. I never saw any notes on Bio-sludge. How long does it take for this stuff to start building up. How often do you catch this bacteria?

I havent seen any sludge yet and I'm on my sixth tank full. I noticed the bacteria at last filter change. It was a little black but never thought any thing about it. I just thought it was dirty. This time it was really black and slimey and I remenbered somebody talking about it on here. I know it wasnt the B20 because it started before I started using the B20.

Kids, I got it from a fuel station that doesn't move much diesel. I was out away from my normal fuel site and instead of only getting a few gallons (which I don't know if it mattered) I filled up. That's how I got it. And I noticed it when I changed my fuel filter about 3 weeks later. I've always had a dark fuel filter, almost black. But that time it was slimey.

So, you can get it from straight diesel. Then we just need to be aware of the black filter symptom, and react to that, correct?
