This is not new. As the article said this project has been going on for 4 years. The current 6L80 tranny used in the Caddy and the Corvette is also a fruit of this colaboration. Ford is not using this tranny but BMW is.
I've said for years that automakers should standardize on components - why should every manufacturer out there make a different version of an alternator? Standardize on about three sizes (amp wise), and fit 'em to all vehicles. Can you imagine what a 100 amp alternator would cost if it were the same on 30 million vehicles? Not to mention how much easier life would be when visiting a junkyard. And the list goes on - starters, wheels, wiper motors, fuel pumps, ......
Imagine what life would have been it every manufacturer from the 1950s on insisted on using a different turn signal bulb...........
But then, my opinions are usually in the minority, however right -

Even GM's worst auto is lightyears better than some of the best transmissions other manufacturers have offered..
You must be young or have a bad memory. GM transmissions included:
The Buick Dynaflow in ther early 50s that was unfixable when it broke (frequently). Those Buicks had a great engine that never broke so they were always junked due to transmission failure.
The Jetaway in the mid 50s used in Oldsmobiles that broke frequently and nobody seemed to be able to fix them. They shifted gradually from one gear to another when they worked.
The Turboglide in the late 50s used in Chevrolet. It was such a failure that GM came out with a kit to convert the cars back to the 2 speed Powerglide.
The Turbo 200 used in the late 70's in most GM cars. It was so light duty, it wasn't a matter of if they broke but when.
The early 4 speed automatics used in light trucks and SUVs. Mileage over 50,000 was a bonus before a rebuild.
The early transmissions (both 3 speed and 4 speed) in GMs FWD vehicles. They broke often and GM even had kits (axle bushings, etc) to fix the design flaw failures.
GM has and has had some great transmissions but their failures outnumber their successes.
You might remember that Chrysler had the first automatic transmission tough enough to withstand drag racing. Those old 727 and 904 transmissions were pretty good and they were easy to overhaul. You could overhaul one of them and feel confident without test driving them.
If GM transmissions are SO terrible how come the following use or have used hydramatic trannys.
BMW, Jaguar, Jeep, soon to be FORD,Isuzu,Honda, just to name tho ones off the top of my head. Shure the first couple of years for the 700r4 were a little weak but compare that to the competition the AOD... We all know how well those handle high HP engines.
The first few FWD gm trannys had some revisions done after the first couple of years. Compare that to the Chrysler corp FWD trannys to this day that you never quite know when it'll explode
I once had a 100k THM200 that survived over a year behind a 403 olds engine with me giving it heck at the wheel.
Compare that to a C3 that had trouble coping with the torque monster 2300 ford
Of course ford trannys being the cream of the crop is why they export so many of them to other manufacturers worldwide......O wait I have that backwards they just give MAZDA a call!
This isn't so much a collaboration on a new 6 speed auto, as GM already sells them to other manufacturers. As it is FORD working out a deal with hydramatic to buy the new Hydra-Matic 6T70 and 6T75 front- and all-wheel drive six speed from GM
thats what i thought. Its funny how they advertise it tho. they make it sound like allison is a gift from god or something.
No it wasn't.....Anyway how is GM advertising of the Allison tranny any diffrent than the way Dodge advertises the Cummins Diesel or Ford with the Powerstroke

Now you're wrong on two counts! First off, the 700r4's were much more than just a little weak, they were/are junk! Secondly, the 6-speed auto was most definitely a collaborated effort by Ford and gm and was going on for years.
I'm not buying what you're here on a Ford site trying to sell
What about that beloved 700r4 auto's the z71's and sierra's had in em. Were those light years ahead of the comp?
Yes,Yes they are! The dodge tranny is pure junk of the highest order and the FORD is between it and the 700R4 If manintained there is really NO limit to the mileage you can put on the 700r4 they literally don't wear. I've seen numerous examples with over 250K that have never had the pan down and the updated 4L60E does even better.
Provided you don't tow in overdrive.

As a general gear head and first class shadetree for a number of years I've had an opportunity first hand to figure out what works and what doesn't.
Unlike most people on this site I'm not blinded by EMOTION! I can tell you that just because there is a blue oval on the grille doesn't mean that all of the parts between there and the tailgate are the best.
My Ideal truck would have a Chevy front suspension a ford 9" rearend a ford body with a Ford 300 I6 and a GM transmission
Come on! get real GM has been selling the 6 speed hydramatic to other manufacturers for a few years now. So what makes you think the Ford purchace is any diffrent. Kinda like the collaboration Ford did with mazda on the M5OD
How many Rollys Royce'es and Ferrari's have come with ford slushboxes?
Recent 700R4s have survived some impressive thrashing in our scrap-hauling Chevy duallies, though I haven't met an unkillable automatic yet. In my older Fords I stick to C-6s since I don't need overdrive.
Agree on the Dodge boxes! I'm always looking for usable units for my customers whose trannies died.
"Unlike most people on this site I'm not blinded by EMOTION!"
Bravo!
I don't get my identity from what I buy from faceless corporations who don't care about me either.
Brand fanboyism is a great sales tool though.
Want to know the BEST truck in the world on any given day?
It's whatever I'm selling!
