Pre-Pump Filter

I am trying to round up supplies for my Hutch mod. I was just wondering how many of you are running a pre-pump filter. I am just wondering if it is necessary to run one since you remove the screen on the bottom of the pickup. What brands and where can I find a good price on them. Also what size of fitting do I need on the inlet side of the fuel pump. Thanks for all your help. These mods getting addictive.

I talked to Guzzle and this is what he said

This is the message:

The reason I used a Racor is because I found one pretty cheap on eBay. It is a discontinued model but worked great until I installed the lift pump. Recently it began showing some fuel seepage around the primer valve. Not much but it appears as if the Racor, unlike the Dahl, can't handle the 7 psi from the lift pump. I will continue to use it until I use up the remaining filter elements I have and then change to a Dahl 100 unit.
Most all of the Racor filters that are for marine usage come with a metal bowl rather than the yellow plastic (another reason I bought it). The 230 or 245 would work fine for our trucks unless you go all out with large injectors and big oil and then the flow may suffer. I would opt for the 245 if you go that direction as its only slightly taller than the 230.
The Racor units are cheaper than the Dahl but their filter elements are much more pricey. With that, the Dahl may be less expensive in the long run if you keep your truck as long as I plan on having mine.</pre>

I thought the pickup foot and screen were re-used in this mod. If I am not mistaken, it is the mixing chamber that is removed and then the pickup is reattached to be located at the same height as it was with the mixing chamber in order for proper clearance at the bottom of the tank.

If you look at how guzzle did it he removed the screen.

I have thought about it, but I still haven't made my mind up yet. If I go with a heavy duty pre-filter I probably will, but if not I won't. I have done a bunch of mods here lately and it is hitting the wallet pretty hard. I have seen a picture on here, where somebody put a small filter in front of the pre-pump. I may just go with a set up that will just include that small filter then the pump. I am trying to get bunch done to maximize my DP-Tuner that is scheduled to be up in by Jody on the 23.

The mixing valve is the unit that does the majority of filtering before sending fuel to the pump, the pickup foot screen is only small enough to keep oak leaves from entering the fuel system.

Removal of the mixing valve is one of the steps for the hutch mod and seems to be one of the culprits for allowing air into the system.

i do have a lift pump and a dahl 150 filter before the main pump. i have the Carter 4070 pump first, then the Dahl, then the main pump. the dahl works for it's intended purpose. i cant say much more as it just sit under the truck, i cant tell a performance or sound difference, but i know it's working. the Carter pump however, i can tell it's working. it is one loud SOB that sounds like a bunch of hornet nests under my truck when it's pumping with the key on before i start it. even with the sound of the engine i can still hear it if i bend over near my fuel door.

I put a Dahl with a vacuum gauge setup to let me know when to change the filter element. I also used a "Full-Flow" valve to let me turn it off for service.

does anyone have a need for another vacuum gauge? i bought from Dieselsite when i bought the filter. i then realized when i put them together on the bench, that it will be under pressure from the lift pump

Of course there is a need for another gauge... I saw how you did yours, but I was under the impression that the Dahl was designed to work under vacuum. Is it rated for pressurized duty as well? When my Dahl got plugged up the fuel pump started sounding like the buzzing bees and I looked at the gauge and it was way up there, above 15". Changed the filter and it dropped back to around 3" of mercury.

i dont really know if it is. i dont think there is anywhere on the directions that say NOT to run it under pressure. i could swap it around to the filter then the pump, then the main pump, however the point was to get the pump as close to the tank as possible i was told. there is a haze of fuel covering the lower half. im guessing it's from the really slow leak i have from one of the ports, there were no fittings included so i had to find a close flare thread and then use several o-rings and thread tape to seal it up, but it still has a tiny bead of fuel at the lowest point of the hose. i guess the road wind blows the fuel around and it sticks to the canister.here is the setup- http://rides.webshots.com/photo/5520...91838520OnFzvE

Just put a hose and a hose clamp over it. I went to tractor supply store (TSC) and purchased the filter housing and filter for around 30 bucks. Large spin on filters are around 10 or less from carquest. Carquest also sells these setups.
