starter issue
starter relay clicks when you turn the key, just one click every time you turn the key. i put a new relay on and same thing happens. i am guessing the starter is shot we banged it with a hammer and it didnt free it up. and hooked the positive jumper directly to the terminal wire on the starter and it didnt spin it over either.
i have dual batteries which i believe are hooked up wrong there is a cross-over cable connected to both positives, and then the ground on the block for each battery. so basically it is a jumper wire for the pos.
i dont have a voltmeter so i cant check if there is power running to the other wire on the starter.
any ideas? need more info?

unless of course you are using 6 volt batteries.

i know the one is good a friend tested it. they are both marine starting batteries 700mca each.
is it worth the extra money for a high torque starter? cause sometimes it seems if it would just crank a little faster it would start. cause they are only like $170-200.

Marine batteries are not as good for starting as a regular car battery. You will actually get more cranking amps out of a car battery.
No matter if you feel the battery is good or not, getting a meter and doing some voltage measurements will help you find the problem. If one battery is bad, it can pull the good one down to where it will not work either.

well ill have to upgrade to some good batteries then.
i diid pick up a starter today and after a little cranking she fired up so it was definatly the starter. and this one has a lifetime replacement so if it lasts another 27 years ill be happy. it is a reman unit so hopefully it will last for awhile.
i need to get it timed cause i think it is out of whack ometimes i get flames out the carb, plus i know the carb is too big for the motor 400 with a 750cfm edelbrock and intake. not cammed or worked as far as i know.

If the motor is cold, it will do that. If your intake manifold is the open single plane type, it will tend to do that too. The dual plane with the divider down the middle helps get rid of it. And yes, definitely check the timing.

yeah it diesels over a bit every now and then as well. so i am gonna get my own timing gun and also a voltmeter in the near future. plus i ahve a small vacuum leak i cant seem to locate the exact spot but it is on the intake.
i sprayed ether around the intake mating surface and it changes the idle a bit.
