Bdox, I have some pics of a 4-3 setup but I haven't read up on how to send them. And my e-mail address has changed since I registered on FTE. And I haven't read up on how to change that either. jbbmw

What if you put a 3spd behind the 4spd. This way you could use the side shift linkage. You could have a remote shifter.

Or find an old B model mack with an 18 speed quadraplex they had enough gears for anything, However the dual gearshifters and the combination to use them are a bear to master.

4+3=6 speeds that is

51dueller, checkout the last pic in my 59F350 album. One word of caution to those who want to try this, do not shift up thur the gears with the rear up on jack stands because the rear tires will explode. Don't ask how I know this. The next project in the works is a NP435 behind a T18. Unfortunately the teeth from 2nd gear in the three speed application are in bottom of the case. jbbmw

Jbbmw, I hope you can make an analysis on what happened to the 2nd gear in the three speed. Especially, if the unususal application contributed to it's failure. I don't mean that I think it did, but then again I don't know why it would fail in that way.

6-speed

Bdox,The 4 speed has a torque multiplication of about 6 times in low gear and 3 times in 2nd. The engine is producing well over 300 lb-ft of torque. 300x6=1800 lb-ft. of potential torque into the 3 speed. In 3rd, of course, the 3 spd transfers torque straight thur the top shaft. But in 2nd torque passes thur the gear train. A good rule of thumb may be, do not plant the right foot until the front transmission is up in third or fourth. Or the rear trans is in direct drive (3rd in a 3spd) or (4th in a 4spd). Either way would have saved the gears. Root cause for the failure was overloading of the gears, although, contributing factors are normal gear wear over the previous life of the 3 spd and the possibility that 2nd gear was not fully engaged when the torque was applied. I did have a temperature sender in the fill plug of the 3 spd. The temp was kept below 200 F on the freeway, by downshifting the 3 spd into 3rd. We were pulling a cargo trailer over the West Virgina mountains. But that's another story. jbbmw

6 speed F-350 now 7 speed

Bdox, checkout the lastest pics in my 59F350 album. The 59F350 now has a NP435 mounted backwards behind the stock 4 spd. for 7 speeds with 3 over direct. jbbmw

2019 update the 59F350 is now back to a 4 spesd. The worn out NP435 had a bearing going out so the entire second trans setup was removed and the orginal front drive shaft reinstalled in 45 minutes on the ground. And then we drove home home at 40 MPH. 5.14 gears ugh. lol
