'56 F-660 rear axle compatibility

I am changing out a single speed rear axle for a two speed axle. The housing is different, so I am changing the entire rear assembly. However, I would llike to re-use the hubs, brakes, backing plates, etc. from the single speed rear end if possible. The single speed rear end only has 14,000 miles on it. Will the outer parts of the single speed axle fir on the two speed unit?
Thanks for your help.

Howdy

They should.

I am doing the same thing.

I've got a Timken 6.80:1 single speed axle that I completely rebuilt the brakes to include sandblasting the backing plates, new cyls, shoes, etc. I also replaced all the bearings, cones and seals in the (5 LUG) hubs.

I recently acquired an Eaton 1350 5.83/8.11:1 2 speed.

It appears that the backing plates are identical. They do have the same hubs too. even the axle shafts are the same part number.

Your 56 might be a slightly larger GW (unless it's also an Eaton 1350), but take a close look at the hubs and axles. They're probably the same.

I'll be installing a completely rebuilt, balanced and ported 292 bolted to an E4OD automatic in front of my 2 speed axle. (see my gallery)

All I need to find now is a power steering setup.

I'd also like to install a split brake system too but I haven't found a suitable split master cyl/booster setup yet.

Any ideas?

Merry Christmas.

Talking Power steering

Rick I have a complete power steering setup from a 59F600 if your interested. School busses use a dual master cylinder setup some are hydraboost some are vacuum operated. My 81 L700 used a dual master cyl with a booster similar to a pickup , all of it was firewall mounted. Let me know if I can help.8146352007
