Bringing my Explorer back from the dead

took the cap off and found that the wire on the condenser was cripmed between the cap and distributor body. I bought a new one, but now it wont even start at all. ran the battery down trying to start it. i looked down into the carb, but couldnt see any fuel shooting into it when i moved the linkage. i guess my next step is another new carb. anyone have any suggestions about how to unstick the distributor so I can advance the timing if i have to?
