88 7.3 mileage

im been looking at different trucks lately and found some that have the c6 trans instead of the e40d. i would like to know how much of a difference in mileage it would make behind a 7.3 non turbo.

looking at:
1988 f350
crewcab longbed
4wd manual shift
c6
unknown gear ratio

That depends a lot on how you will drive it.
The C 6 is a direct drive transmission.
The E4OD is an overdrive transmission.
So if you intend to do a lot of driving at interstate speeds the MPG impact will be 6 or 7 MPG.

Something else to consider, the C6 is bulletproof compared to the E4OD.
E4OD rebuilds are in the 3 to 4 thousand dollar range.

Diesel fuel mileage is a hard thing to predict, so much of it depends on how you drive, what you haul or tow and what type of terrain you live in.

I have the same truck, and 88 and everything. Mine has a C6 and got 10 mpg avg everytime until I put a GearVendors Overdrive which basically makes it act like an E4OD, so now it gets about 14 mpg. Gear vendors is not something that is normally financially worthwhile, unless you take one off something else, like i did.

i drove 570 miles on 30 gallons of fuel right before i filled up yesterday. 19 MPG.

my all time record is 22.3, and the worst i've ever gotten was 13. average is usually 17-18, but it all depends on how you drive it.

Mine averages around 16 daily driving. 20 on the highway. My exhaust is too small (2"), so when I open that up to 4", I'm hoping to gain about 2 mpg.

when my 88 had the zf5 speed in it, i averaged 19-23 on the road, and 15-19 around town. this was with the turbo, 35 inch tires, and 4.10 gears.
after i put the C/6 in it, mileage around town went down to 9-12, but it seems to always be loaded to the max, or towing 7-8 tons. i have not taken it on a road trip with the C/6, i have the crown vic for long runs.

well, i called the owner, the truck came with 4.10 gears but he said the truck turns about 3000 rpms at 65mph so that turns into 4.56 gears.

not with the C/6. the C/6 does not have a locking torque converter, so you can not determine rpm verses speed like you do with a manual trans.
that sounds about rite with stock tires. with the 36's i have on mine, 3000 is about 72 mph

you sorta can relate speed and rpm on a c6, vaguely. when i had a c6, the rpm were 200-300 above what a direct drive manual should be. he gave me a range of 3000-3200 rpms at 65mph, it also has an ATS torque convertor so that should be tighter(less slippage) than a stock one.
