I am looking at either a 83 f150 4x4 with a 351w, holley 4 barrel it has a exhust manofoild leak 4 speed granny low for $500 or a 88 f150 300 4speed granny low 4x4 oversize tires a 6 in left kit witch is a better deal thanks
Joe
I would personally go for the one with the 300 1- better gas mileage and 2- the lift is cool just my .02 cents i'm sure people would argue with me on this so yeah just my opinion and i'm sure you could talk whoever owns it down on it
is there much advantage in power, torque, gas mileage, up keep, relieiblete, cost of repairs etc please tell me and what is the differnce overall in a 83 to a 88 thanks
the 300 i6 is a very torquee (word? lol) motor, the one i had needed very minimal work done, has around 230k and hasnt had the valvecover off yet, thats saying something, and it starts all the time... 351w has more power in the long run but getting about 5-7 MPG worse is a fair estimate imo I think the 88 300 would be cheaper in the long run hope this helps any
edit- if you dont buy the one w/ the i6 lemme know where it is and i will be all oer it

well if you are going for performance go for the 351w lol but for overall i would go for the 300 and its hard to tell what has been done to the lifted truck it could be slightly modified or not its hard to tell.
Well, the 88 will be fuel injected which means you can run it at any angle without it stalling. The tranny, axles, and t-case will likely be the same as the 83 but you will get about 15-17 mpg's with the 88 if it's been geared down to match the size of the tires. Bottom line, get the 88 with the 300 and you won't regret it. I miss my 83 F-150 with the 300 everyday I drive my 86 F-250 with a 460.
The axles are; Dana 44 TTB front, 8.8" rear. Tranny should be either an NP-435 or T-18 but it doesn't really matter as they're just about identical strength wise. The t-case should be an NP-208. It's a good unit but it's not as strong as an older NP-205.
What the heck for those prices buy them both
I picked up my 84 4X4 for $240.00 but have spent lots of time on it and some money.
Make sure you check out the Tcase to see that it works in both. Check fluid levels in diffs, tcase and trannies if you can. Might save you some surprises down the road. I myself would probably stay away from the 88 based on the fact that often when these trucks are modified (lifted etc.) they tend to get used/abused hard. See if there are clunks in the drive train, loose sloppy gears and driveline. The 300's are for the most part good engines, people always say they have lots of torque. Anyone that I have had was OK nothing special just something to drive, never had a truck with a 351W in it that was running.
Good luck
just thought id chime in my vote for the one with the 351w, most here say how great the 300 6 cyl is, and grant it they run forever and do make good torque. But really a 351 w makes good torque and will rev faster and higher, kinda a more fun motor if that makes sense. now if we where comparing a 302 in a truck to a 300 6 id say take the 300. From what i have observed the 300 makes great torque till 3000 rpm but is no high rever just great pulling power, where as the 351w does both Just my 2 cents, there both good motors.
lol yeah ok the 351 makes more power. and sucks more gas? whats the point in stopping w/ a 351? run up to a 514 stroker. i was getting 5 w/ my stroker... and only 9 outta my 351 and i'm sure i'd put your 351 to shame hah
