It should have the C4 or the C6 and there is an easy way to tell. The C4 has a removable bellhousing. The bell is cast into the tranny case on the C6. You just gotta look under the truck and see. If it is behind a 302, then it will bolt to a 351W.

my 86 4x4 has a aod transmission that is the most common if you find a 302 efi with a c-6 someone has had to have put it in it. I agree that I would rather have a c-6 but I dont think they came out that way.also a c-6 has vacum going to it where a aod will have a tv cable going to it off the throttle linkage. a c-4 will also have vacum as well.

c4 wasnt an option in our trucks. they stopped being used in the late 70's. the C6 will be a 3 speed on the column shifter while the AOD would have OD on the shift selector

I believe that the C4 was last used in 81' It may be a C5. Count the bolts and the shape of the pan.
