I have an 88 f250 with a 7.5 litter engine. Any ideas on how i can improve the gass mileage on that thing. I currently get about 9 miles to the gallon with it. It can carry a huge load though and i carry a lot of tools. Should just off load it and look for something else?. Any suggestions would be cool. thanks.
I always get a good chuckle when I hear the terms 7.5l or 6.8l and gas mileage in the same paragraph. I think looking into a diesel may be your best bet.
only suggestions i have are a bigger intake and exhaust. I know that putting a bigger intake and exhaust on my 05 DIESEL SuperDuty i went from 16mpg to 23/24mpg.
thanks guys and yes i know its funny to hear big engines and gass mileage. I didnt know that the engine was so big until i saw the gas gauge going down as i drove. Not a bad truck and holds a lot of stuff, but i did think about diesel. Ill check out that bigger manifold and exhaust thing. Im in california so i probably cant change too much about that stuff. Theyre very strict with smog stuff here. Thanks for the reply's though. J.
If I can recall I only got 6mpg on my 87 F250 460 Gasser. Put a trailer on and it went down to 4mpg. It was still running strong at 195K but would not pass smog test.
The last 460 I owned got 6 mpg (4 in town and 2 on the road) LOL. My PSD gets 17.3 till I hook up my trailer then it gets around 9-10 mpg but thats at 70 mph up hill, down hill, head wind or no wind. It pulls it a lot easier than the 460 did too. Then I put the 460 in a '79 Cougar just cause they told me it wouldn't fit. Talk about a screaming machine...................oh well nuther story. Like the man said "buy u a diesel". Just my 2 cents.
Ya, I say the 9 MPG is pretty good for that truck. We have the exact same truck at work but it is a F-Super Duty. It has a dump box about 12 feet or so long and 6 feet high that is filled with woodchips. It also tows a 7000 pound brush chipper behind it. I would be surprised if it got 7-8 MPG. Not much you can do.
Hey thanks alot for the info. You guys actually made me feel better about the truck. I like it a lot and they don't build them like that anymore. All metal and a huge axel. I think it might be worth fixing up and keeping for a while. I do tile and i need to carry lots of tools and tile and the 8 foot bed handles it great. Very funny replies too by the way. They made me laugh a bit. Thx. Justin.

I had a '92 460 that got 10 or 11 mpg. put a Flowmaster exhaust on it and went to 12.5 mpg. Not that I expected it, it was just an added bonus 'cuz I needed exhaust!
