HI! I'm new to the site and have a question for you experienced Powerstroke owners. I just purchased a 2006 F250 crew cab FX4 with the 6.0 liter powerstroke with automatic transmission and hand calculating mileage for the 1st two tanks was about 11 MPG. I have a commercial utility top on the truck, ladders on top, and probably an additional 400 - 500 lbs (at the most) of parts and tools inside. Is it a possibility that the dealer needs to flash the computer. It also seems when I take off from a dead stop, it is pretty slow and then it will take off. What do you think? Thanks in advance!
I would think the slow start would be the turbo spooling up, but that's just a guess. Check the thread in the 6.0 forum about fuel mileage. 11mpg seems awful low based on the previous posts, but with the added weight it probably won't be 17 - 18mpg either.
Maybe the added weight won't affect your gas mileage very much but sometimes stuff on the top can cause wind resistence the may hurt mpg's. I had a Suburban and when my wife put a canoe rack on top my mpg dropped a couple.
Thanks for your replies. I figured the weight and ladders on top would effect this somewhat. Even the break-in period. I'm hoping it will increase at least a couple miles per gallon. I am considering a programmer but am worried about repairs being denied under factory warranty. I have been spending about $600 - $800 per month on fuel with my previous truck at 10.5 miles per gallon (gas engine). One of my bigger reasons to trade it in was fuel economy.
The ladders on top cause some wind resistance and the added weight from tools all these together could be causing the low MPG but I dont think enough to drop it to 11 MPG. As far as slow from a dead stop it does sound like the turbo is slow to spool.
Please excuse the ignorance on my part. Would it being slow to spool be something the dealer can improve or is this something that would improve over time. I feel like when I pull out into traffic, I'm going to get hit. I just figured I am just used to my old (2005) f-250 5.4. Also being slow to spool would cause bad fuel mileage wouldn't it?
10.5-11 towing my 11,500 5ther over mutiple mountain ranges. I would say its low. I'm chipped and have a 125 gal tank in the rear of my truck. Even with that weight I get 18-19 in economy mode through the mountains..
The slow power response is the dreaded turbo lag. It's normal for the 6.0 and not much you can do about it short of getting an aftermarket turbo. You just have to compensate by changing your driving habits. As far as the mileage goes, it sounds a little low even with the equipment. However, you've only got a couple tanks under your belt. I'd give it another couple tanks and then see how it's doing. If it's still low, you might take it in and see if it's throwing any codes. Keep in mind that break-in for a diesel is around 20k miles. You should see incremental improvements during this mileage window.
My ex-inlaws have a 03 F350 crew cab with a bone stock 6.0 and it is anything but sluggish... it will out run my 97 250 with a 460 easy so i would think something is afoot.... i would take it to the dealer just to make sure things are in order especially with the price of diesel... 11 mpg out of a diesel that is lightly loaded seems way low to me...
My 2005 got about 16-17 right out of the dealer's lot! Got better as miles piled up. Getting abot 19 running empty on thruway. About 15 combined. But still have just under 10k on it.
What kind of speeds are you traveling, and at what mix of intown and highway driving? That will make a big difference in mileage too. Anything over 70 MPH is going to hit you hard with a ladder rack, and I'm not sure how big your utility box is.
Use the online decoder to learn your rear axle ration too.
My best with the older 7.3 is about 17 MPG at 62 MPH. I put the camper on, ... well, I'm guessing 12 to 13
My 2006 F250 CC diesel 6.0 is getting around 17.5 miles to the gallons mixed driving. So i think
11 is way to low maybe the dealership can reflash the computer??
I know the 7.3 is a different engine. I have the 7.3 w/ 3:73 gearing and at 65 mph I get 22 mpg,, at 70 mph I get 19 at 75 mpg 18,, It drops quickly above 65. So I keep most of my local driving to 65 and my combined city hwy is 17 or so mpg. However when I pull my 6000 boat the mpg drops to 13 on flat ground. No mountains here in south La.
My son had the 6.0 4x4 and he is a "little heavy footed" and runs 17 + on the highway with light load. So if you are only getting 11 mpg I would look for an issue. Best of luck. Vettdvr
I have kept very accurate records since I bought my 05 new in Feb. 05 and the best calculated fuel milage I got with one tank was 15.26 on a road trip to AZ unloaded. The worst was 8.06 towing on bad roads in Mexico. In 26,893 miles of driving I have used 2,193.27 gallons of fuel for an average of 12.36 Mpg. I have no idea how you guys that report 17 and 18 or more Mpg do it. My friend who ordered his truck the same day as me has a light foot and is getting around 14.5 and never tows.
