2001 Ranger 4.0L. Check engine light on and and it checked. Code read bank1 misfiring and bank2 misfiring. Other than plug and plug wire, what else could this be?
I took it to Auto Zone and they read it bank 1 bank 2 misfiring. They reset it and the light stayed off for 4 days then came back on. Both thimes it came on the truck was on a hill. Don't know if that means anything or not but I did notice the position of the truck both times
Just went to Auto Zone and had it read. The same code came up twice. Error code PO174. Bank 2-system lean. This was different than the first time when they said system misfiring. Don't know what the deal is. Hoping to get some help here. Thanks
P0174 is a system lean code. A lean condition can cause misfires, which is why I would still keep the upper intake gasket(s) on my list of possible suspects. Seems to be something I've been reading a little more about lately. Ford even has an improved replacement gasket set available.
But you should never jump to conclusions, so make sure you first check all the vacuum hoses and connections for leaks and look over the PVC system to make sure no unmetered air is finding it's way into the combustion chambers.
Since lack of proper fuel dilevery can also cause a lean running engine, a fuel pressure check would be good, if the fuel filter hasn't been replaced in a while you might consider doing that even as a bit of regular maintenance.
Just found the clamp to the 4" hose connected to the air filter compartment was loose . Could that be the problem? BTW, where is the fuel filter and the PCV vavle located?
Yup, if the air box air tube is leaking dirty air into the MAF which sits directly behind that connection, the MAF could be dirty/dusty & that could uncalibrate it's output to the computer, about true air flow into the engine.
Look in the "Technical Info" thread, atop this forums main page, on how to, locate, remove & CAREFULLY clean the MAF sensor. I'd suggest you use a O2 safe "throttle body" spray cleaner on it.
If the air tube & trottle body, is really dirty inside, I'd remove & clean them out too.
You may have more than one problem here, so just find & address the most obvious one/s, then move on to the next most likely suspect.
As Rockledge said the 4.0L has a history of intake manafold gasket leaks, from loose fastners, so if the air tube & MAF cleaning don't solve all your problems, look to loose intake manafold fastners, maybe try retorquing them. Of course look for loose poor fitting or damaged vacuum lines.
The PCV should be atop the drivers side valve cover, toward the firewall.
Just stick with it & whittle away at the problems you find.
